7 Ways to Celebrate the Summer Solstice in London

Friday 21 June marks the Summer Solstice – the precise planetary moment the Earth’s tilt reaches its zenith, resulting in the longest day of the year for anyone living north of the equator. A very spiritual date for many cultures, it’s the perfect chance to celebrate and ‘wake up’ your spirit for the summer. 1 Aztec Sunrise Celebrations at Queen of Hoxton, Shoreditch

Queen of Hoxton is inviting you to celebrate the sacred Summer Solstice sunrise up on the rooftop. Part of the Shoreditch venue’s summer event series, curated by proud Mexican-Londoner Paula Feregrino-Rodriguez, the event, kicking off at 6am, features traditional Aztek dance group Atlachinolli, who will guide your spirit through healing and welcome the sunrise with rituals from ancient Aztek culture. You’ll will be invited to sing and dance to live hypnotic flutes and drums on a traditional Aztec flower carpet. Goodness knows we could all do with a little purification of spirit… 6am-10am.

2 Summer Solstice with Norman Jay at Madison, St Paul’s
21 June

Madison is hosting a Summer Solstice party on its famous roof terrace with the even more famous Norman Jay MBE on the decks. Celebrate the longest day of the year with the legendary DJ that co-founded the Good Times Sound System and KISS FM. The party starts at 3pm with Izaak Gray on the decks, then Lulah Frances from 6pm and Norman Jay spinning from 9pm-11pm. 3 Tarot Card Reading & Horoscope Cocktails at Barts, Chelsea
From 21 June
Barts speakeasy has developed a menu of 12 unique cocktails that represent the different horoscopes to mark the Summer Solstice. Launching on 21 June, the special menu, which represents each star sign with a cocktail for your key characteristics and personality traits, will run through to the end of the summer. Cancers, for example, known for being indecisive, can sip on a three-layered cocktail that challenges you to identify the three different flavours. Head there on Friday 21st for an exclusive Tarot Card Reading while sipping on your tailor-made cocktail.

4 Summer Solstice Self Care at The London EDITION, Fitzrovia

5 Free Yoga at Eccleston Yards, Belgravia

Eccleston Yards is hosting a range of outdoor yoga sessions in its tranquil, off-the-beaten-path courtyard this summer, kicking off with a free yoga session for International Yoga Day on the Summer Solstice (21 June). Organised by London’s leading health and wellbeing centre, The Light Centre, the class will run from 6pm-6.45pm with taster therapy session before, during and after the class and a 10-minute meditation afterwards (spots are free but do book to confirm your space here. Other yoga events have been organised by luxury athleisure-wear Silou, and scandi beauty salon SMUK, taking place on Saturday 29 June at 9.30am, Thursday 18 July at 7pm and Thursday 22 August at 7pm. These sessions will cost £15 including a Vinyasa-style yoga class, goodiebag and a smoothie. 6 Hendrick’s Midsummer Solstice Street Party at Nine Lives, London Bridge

This solstice, Nine Lives is celebrating with a street party in conjunction with Hendrick’s Midsummer Solstice Gin. The neighbourhood bar will celebrate Hendrick’s new playfully light yet wickedly crisp libation this Saturday, as partygoers bask in the midsummer sun. The event, set on the beautiful cobbled outdoor space during the day and inside the Victorian bar as the sun sets, will feature DJs, immersive actors, award-winning makeup artist Caroline Young working on wild face and body painting. Sip on summertime concoctions from the open-air bar such as The Wickerman (a sweet-and-sour combination of Hendrick’s floral Midsummer Solstice Gin, cold-brew jasmine tea, tropical pineapple syrup and lemon), and Vivid Blooms (gin with rhubarb and ginger cordial, aromatic lavender bitters and pomegranate & hibiscus soda). Join mindfulness guru Michael James Wong to celebrate International Yoga Day and the longest day of the year with an alfresco yoga class in Gasholder Park. Harness the power of summer sun through an empowering yoga flow, followed by a guided meditation and refreshments.
