Drive-ins are the way forward for socially distanced summer fun, it would seem, and Chef Tom Kerridge is riding the wave of practical COVID-secure summer event solutions by launching Drive & Dine Theatre.
While Tom Kerridge’s Pub in the Park summer festival tour has had to be postponed, his latest project, the Drive & Dine Theatre, is set to reignite the glory days of drive-in cinema screenings – but its out with the popcorn and in with a gourmet experience.
As well as enjoying the latest award-winning blockbusters, guests will be able to tuck into an exclusive menu curated by Chef Tom Kerridge, to be enjoyed with members of your household – or your newly formed social bubble – in the comfort and safety of your own car.
‘I am so excited to announce a great new event created to have a load of fun in a way that is safely suited to current times,’ said Tom Kerridge. ‘Come and eat some good grub, catch some quality movies, and make some new memories with your loved ones. It’s the perfect trip out of the house!’
So how will it all work?
The event, which is heading out on a national tour from 7 July to 2 August 2020, will be wheeling out the world’s largest mobile HD LED screen, on which you can enjoy a line-up of family films and iconic classics, as well as stand-up sessions from Mark Watson’s Carpool Comedy Club. Personal speaker systems will be provided for each car and food served straight to your parking bay, so all you need to do is pull up, sit back and enjoy the show.

COVID-secure measures include the careful spacing of cars, staff wearing protective face masks and gloves, contactless food and drink service via a table in your parking bay, and electronic tickets checked from a distance.
And the loos? Toilets will, of course, be available. To use them, you’ll need to pop your hazard lights on to attract the attention of a steward, who will direct you to the loo when it is safe to leave your car (if there’s a queue, you’ll need to wait in your car, which frankly beats queuing on your on two feet by a country mile). All toilets will be manned by an attendant and cleaned thoroughly between uses.
Films on offer include recent blockbusters 1917 and Knives Out, family favourites The BFG and Aladdin, along with drive-in classics Grease, Back to the Future and Jaws.
The Drive & Dine menu includes a Bacon Cheeseburger with maple-cured bacon, Chicken Tikka Masala, Five Bean Chilli Vegan Burrito and Picnic Boxes suitable for adults or children, as well as desserts like TKO Biscuit Cheesecake and Millionaires Chocolate Pot and tea, coffee, softies and alcohol.
The drive-in will be parking up in London on two different sites, one in west London and one in south London, from 28 July-2 August (see below).
Plans for further events in August and September, including Tom Kerridge’s original Pub in the Park tour, will be announced in a couple of weeks, to allow for any updates to government guidance (Pub in the Park is due to run from mid-August).
