Dan McFall is a South London artist who has been capturing iconic scenes of the city for most of his life. He tells us about the inspiration behind his work below

‘I’ve lived in Tooting for 30 years and have been painting throughout my life. Seven years ago, I had a serious accident while working as a postman. For medical reasons, I was forced to retire and I got back into painting more seriously.

My inspiration is the great L. S. Lowry. I love to paint things that bring back a happy time or memory. I painted for a man who used to meet his girlfriend every Saturday morning at Harrington’s pie & mash shop on Tooting Broadway in 1969. I am happy to say the couple are still together and she loved the painting.

I also paint houses, pubs, streets that are no longer around. I call it ‘disappearing London.’ These are memories of a time that we may never see again. If I can bring about a sense of nostalgia through my paintings and make someone smile, then that’s great.’

Dan’s paintings are on sale at Blackheath’s newest gallery  The Artful Pelican, 143 Lee Road, SE3 9DJ. See a sample of Dan’s work below and visit southlondonartistdan.co.uk to find out more.   MORE: SOUTH EAST LONDON’S 15 BEST ART GALLERIES 5 WAY TO EMBRACE SOUTH LONDON’S ART SCENE
