The Resident chats with Kit & Kin co-founders, Emma Bunton and Christopher Money, on the launch of their new environmentally friendly baby product line…

The nappy conundrum – I remember it well. As a nervous west London mum having my first baby, I wanted to do everything perfectly.

Knowing full well the rotten rep regular nappies have (the landfill stats are horrifying), I tried various options to ‘be good’ – environmentally friendly ones, the old Terry towels with disposable lining that I then soaked, washed and dried. The result – exploding nappies, leaky legs, washing everywhere, over-tired mummy, resignation and conversion to big name disposables, because, well, at least they worked!

But how amazing would it be if you could have it all – a genuinely environmentally friendly nappy, a genuine company that really is about giving back and a nappy that genuinely works? Enter former Spice Girl-turned-Heart radio DJ Emma Bunton, who founded environmentally sound baby product company Kit & Kin with her business partner, Richmond resident Christopher Money. Kit & Kin creates creams and nappies that are not only eco-friendly, but actually work.

Of course we all knew Bunton as Baby Spice, but now, a couple of decades on, it was her own baby that prompted her to partner with Money. Thanks to an intro from a mutual friend, the two bonded instantly and knew they shared a vision and dream of creating a range of safe, natural and eco-friendly products for babies and mums that were also effective.

Money’s background is baby and maternity products, so he knew how to do the product side, while Bunton has been heavily involved in the branding, e-commerce, promotions and videos. The key to all this is that they are both parents, and I get the impression it’s not just a new brand they’re creating, it’s a real mission.

‘Emma is just so passionate about creating something that is not just good for the environment, but actually gives back, so we hope to have created something that really has it all,’ explains Money.

In addition to the eco-credentials of the nappies themselves, they support the World Land Trust, which buys rainforest land to protect it from destruction.

‘Acknowledged as a critical part of the world’s eco-system, the rainforest is on course to disappear within our children’s lifetimes – yes that’s right – around 50 years’ time, so it’s vital that something is done now,’ says Money. ‘For every 10 nappy subscriptions, we buy one acre of rainforest. We can’t save it all, but we can do our little bit to help.’

Kit & Kin has also developed a range of other products with the same level of eco-street cred and have more in the pipeline. The baby creams came about because Bunton’s youngest boy suffers from eczema.

‘My son has always suffered with eczema and for so many years we struggled to find products that weren’t full of chemicals that would further irritate his skin,’ she explains. ‘As a mother, my children are my number one priority and I do everything I can to ensure they’re always safe, healthy and happy.’

With Kit & Kin, the aim was to take away the stress and worry parents have when trying to choose the best products for their family. ‘That’s why we’ve developed an amazing range that you can trust to care and protect for your family as they grow,’ she adds.

This is something that Money fully agrees with. ‘I’ve been in the industry for 15 years, but becoming a dad changed things massively for me,’ he says.

‘There’s nothing more important than creating a healthy and happy environment to bring up your children and create a range of products we can use on them. My youngest has particularly dry skin – so it’s really nice to develop products that really help him.’

All Kit & Kin products are 100% natural, PETA approved so none are tested on animals, certified natural by The Soil Association, clinically tested for hypoallergenic and approved by dermatologists. They use only pure natural products such as coconut, lavender, watermelon, mango, prickly pear, marshmallow, strawberries, and aloe vera.

‘Basically, it’s nature at its best,’ says Money.

Despite only launching this spring, there’s already been an overwhelmingly positive reaction – with elite nursery group Maggie & Rose now using the brand and plenty of overseas interest. Although it’s too late for me and my not-so-little ones, they are so enthused about their products that I almost want to go back to buying nappies…
