One Tower Bridge has got a new tenant! The London Theatre Company will open a 900-seat theatre at the riverside venue
From the world’s first ‘sky pool‘ at Nine Elms to N1’s Islington Square, it’s an exciting time for property and building development in London. The latest news? Berkeley Homes, the developers behind One Tower Bridge, has announced The London Theatre Company will open a 900-seat theatre as its flaghsip tenant.
The theatre company, founded by Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr in 2014, is set to open along with the wider One Tower Bridge development in 2017. This will also include 400 apartments, landscaped public piazzas, pedestrian streets and commercial units for restaurants and shops.
The riverside location has been destined to be a new cultural venue in the capital for over 20 years and originally, it was thought the Royal Opera House would move here from their home in Covent Garden. Designed by prize-winning designer Steve Tompkins of Haworth Tompkins, the theatre is part of Southwark Council’s vision to redevelop the wider area.
Councillor Peter John, leader of Southwark Council, has addressed Berkeley Homes’ news.
‘We’re delighted to be welcoming some of the leading lights in theatre to Southwark with this fantastic new facility – one of the largest new theatres in London,’ he said. ‘The excellent work the London Theatre Company will bring to the borough will cement Southwark’s reputation as one of London’s most upcoming destinations for arts and culture and ensure that local people benefit from the developments happening on their doorstep.’
