Second Floor Studios & Arts in Woolwich is London’s largest studio community with over 400 artists, printmakers, craft and designer makers. From Saturday 15th to Sunday 16th November, 11am-6pm, the creative community invites you into its workspace for the biannual Open Studios, increasingly recognised as one of the most successful of its kind in London. Members will open their studios to showcase their individual practices and exhibit their original works to buy direct, commission-free. Here are five creatives you don’t wan’t to miss…
Naki Kaddu, the designer behind Kizmet Designer Jewellery (KDJ), is a Holts Academy & UAL trained designer in Jewellery Silversmithing and Manufacturing. Each piece of contemporary-style jewellery is designed and compiled by Naki and always made in limited editions. Prices from £45. Unit 2, Studio 47.
Gail Brodholt is a painter and printmaker. Her contemporary lino-cut, four-colour prints are inspired by the urban landscape, London’s train stations and the underground. Her striking work sensitively portrays light and atmosphere. Prices from £120. Unit TB102.
Dave Breen is an abstract figurative painter and practising graphic designer. Dave’s work has a strong use of colour and line with an illustrative quality. He has tutored at Camberwell College and lists his influences as Jean Dubuffet, Francis Bacon, Keiichi Tanaami, 60s kitchen sink films and UK horror movies. His recent series of canvases are from £1,200. Unit 6, Studio 4.
Justine Randall creates tapestries. Justine is a contemporary colourist working with hand-dyed thread. The colours she selects correlate to her emotional response to colour, the associated memories and in response to sensory stimulation such as the seasons. Price on request. Unit 4, Studio 14.
Sebastian Cox is a young furniture designer-maker with a strong following. Sebastian recently exhibited with the V&A as part of the Wish List project, which invited 10 design legends and 10 emerging talents to design and make something they have always wanted, but never been able to find. He designed and built a desk/office space for Jasper Conran. Sebastian is passionate about the UK woodland and working with locally copied wood. Prices from £400. Studio TW44.
Modern Makers III: Fashion & Textiles
No Format gallery, SFSA’s permanent interdisciplinary galley space hosts the third in a series of exhibitions celebrating the diversity of contemporary makers based at the studios.
Life Drawing
Free drop-in life drawing in the education space at the front of Unit 2 (1st floor) from 12-5pm on both Saturday and Sunday. An artist will be on hand to offer guidance and tips. Materials provided.
Family trail activity sheet
Families can enjoy exploring the site, solving clues and answering the questions together. Look out for the bright purple stars!
Social Enterprise Arts Cafe
Serving up fresh soups, crusty bread and a selection of indulgent homemade cakes. CANTEEN will also be serving delicious treats at the front of Unit 0.
