When should you put up your Christmas tree? Well, that depends who you ask…
The Catholic tradition is to decorate the tree on Christmas Eve or, if that’s a bit stressful, on the third Sunday of Advent Many Americans like to put their tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving, but you could also put it up 12 days before Christmas Day, on 13 December Good practical advice to follow though, is that of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association – for fresh-cut trees, they recommend holding off until 1 December at least, to ensure your tree lasts until the big day.
But where to buy the best? The Resident has compiled a list of London’s finest Nordmann Firs and Norway Spruces retailers in your local area…
1 Shoots & Leaves, various locations
Shoots & Leaves has a number of stores in west and south west London – find them at Little Brook Green W6, Acton Park W3, Eel Brook Common SW6 and Cleveland Park W13. The team goes to great lengths to visit the farms and hand pick every Christmas tree. You can collect it, have it delivered, order it online and even opt for the installation service. 2 Clifton Nurseries, Maida Vale
One of London’s oldest garden centres, Clifton Nurseries in Maida Vale has been around since 1851. Here you’ll find Nordmann firs grown in sustainable forests in Denmark. The garden centre also stocks unusual gifts, festive cards, wrap and accessories, tree decorations, Christmas lights and, of course, plenty of indoor and outdoor plants and pots.

3 The Christmas Forest, various locations
The Christmas Forest group provides beautiful Christmas trees to Londoners while giving a little bit back to Mother Nature. For every tree sold a new tree is planted in Africa through Tree Aid. 9 Clickmas Trees, Crofton Park, Kennington & Shad Thames
Clickmas Trees is a small family business started by John Davis-Taylor and Louise Washford in 2009. As well as delivering premium grade Nordmann Fir Christmas trees to homes and businesses around London, Clickmas also has pop-up shops located in Crofton Park (from TBC), Kennington (from TBC), and Flamingo Park (from TBC). A free delivery service is available to some local postcode area, otherwise a delivery charge applies. Delivery is seven days a week from 19 November to 22 December. Click-and-collect is also an option.

2 Columbia Road Flower Market, Bethnal Green
London’s famous flower market will sell some of the UK’s finest Christmas trees every Sunday come the back end of November. Anyone familiar with this heaving yet compact market knows that it used to get super congested as people shuffled along bumper-to-bumper looking at all the glorious plants and flowers. While the socially-distanced queuing system is no longer in use, a good thing to come out of the pandemic is that the market’s layout has now changed so people are no longer sardined together. Columbia Road Flower Market is a great spot to do some Christmas shopping as the road is lined with independent boutiques and shops selling everything from old-school vinyl to handmade ceramics and antiques.

Broadway Market has also seen a pandemic reorganisation, and is also less hectic than it once was. This Christmas, The Stem has Britain-grown Nordmann Firs from the same farm that will supply Downing Street’s tree, which come in several sizes. There’s also living and pot grown mini Blue Spruce trees (45cm and 70cm) for those looking for a Christmas tree for small spaces or one you can reuse next year. Pre-order trees before 21 November for 15 per cent off using the code FIRXMAS. For every tree cut, 10 trees will be planted, and trees are delivered to your door by an electric van on your chosen day. Scottish On Cloud Pine offer UK-wide delivery on Nordmann Fir Christmas trees which are available to order now. Each tree comes with an ID number which, when imputed into the search database on On Cloud Pine’s website, tells you where your tree was grown, which is pretty cool.

The workers at Good Elf can provide expert advice on choosing the best Christmas tree for your home or office. They offer non-drop trees, traditional trees and potted Christmas tree too.
