Whether you’re investing in a new headboard or luxurious bed linen, give your bedroom a glamorous makeover with these expert tips and decorating ideas. Story: Kara O’Reilly

Want to add a touch of five-star quality to your bedroom? There’s more to it than choosing the right bed linen. After all, the key to a good night’s sleep is a good mattress.

However, the key to creating beautiful boudoir lies in the art of dressing your bed, says Anne Barnes, the deputy head of housekeeping at Claridges.

‘All our specially-made Sleepeezee beds are made up with the following items: a thick mattress topper with a mattress protector on top of that,’ Barnes told us. ‘We use king-size 13.5 tog feather and down duvets, accompanied by four generous, extra-large feather and down pillows (cm). These are then dressed in 300 thread count embroidered linen which is made in Italy for us by linen specialists, Rivolta. Hospital corners are a must when tucking in sheets, while a cashmere throw placed across the end of the bed is a lovely way to finish.’

Caring for your linen is just as important. ‘You should change your sheets weekly and wash them at 60 degrees,’ Barnes added. ‘Try to dry your linen outside if possible, and don’t over-dry in a tumble dryer as this makes it difficult to press. Freshly ironed bedding is lovely, although this is easy for us to do as we have a large professional presser through which we pass all our linen. At home you should fold your sheet or duvet in half, press one side and then the other.’
