Autumn is the season for feeling warm and snug indoors. From changing lighting to adding softer textiles, award-winning homeware designer Victoria Eggs shares six top tips for adding a cosy touch to your home

The Resident:

1. Add a warm glow

Replace any cool, white lights with warm yellow bulbs or invest in some fairy lights! Hang these over a fireplace, mirror or doorframe; alternatively cluster them in a glass bowl, vase or jar. Adding yellow light instantly makes a room feel cosy. You can make them using jam jars and tea lights.

2. Snuggle up

Drape a plush blanket or thick woolen throw over the arm of a sofa or the end of the bed to add
texture and soften a room. Accessorize sofas, beds, chairs or even a large windowsill with cushions for a touch of warmth and burst of colour. This will create the perfect condition for watching a film on the sofa and snuggling under your blanket.

3. Cosy feet

Rooms with wooden or tiled floors can often feel cold and stark; try adding a large rug to make the
room more intimate whilst maintaining the feature floors. Rugs will also add colour and style and there’s
nothing like stepping out of bed onto decadently soft pile.

4. Spot the signs

Hanging homely signs are an excellent way to add personality and fun. These can be related to the rooms they are in. Try using creative typography to soften stark walls. You can even make them yourself if you’re feeling creative, using wood and a sharpie, or paint for a more personal touch.

5. Bring nature inside

Go green with beautiful vases filled with real or faux flowers. Nothing quite brightens a room and makes it feel like home than a vibrant bunch of flowers on the table. Green non-flowering plants are great because they consistently add colour. Try a terrarium hanging from the ceiling, or if you don’t have a plant pot, use a teacup instead. These work particularity well with herbs such as basil, and are a style point in their own right.

6. Little touches

Don’t overlook the little touches when making your space more homely. Clusters of photos and
candles really help develop a house into your perfect home. Or consider shadow boxes, filled with mementos that evoke happy memories. Artfully arranged wicker baskets or vintage suitcases also create levels and help eliminate dead space, and can even double as somewhere to rest your cuppa or a sneaky storage solutions!
