Huf Haus is a century-old German firm that made prefab chic. The custom-made timber and glass homes are strikingly modern and super energy efficient – close to zero carbon, in fact.

Everything is engineered, from the basic fabric of the house to the timber floors and white Corian sinks, with factory-finished structural joists and steel bolts purposefully exposed to create free-flowing spaces that take open-plan living to another level.

The walls are predominantly full-height triple-glazed windows, which are more energy efficient than most walls, and is derived through ground or air source pumps, while electricity is generated through solar panels.

The houses are rare, with only about 200 a year built in the UK, but they were pretty unheard of here until a 2004 episode of Channel Four’s Grand Designs, featuring pensioners Greta and David Iredale, brought the company to the attention of the Brits.
