Located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Newton Ferrers is one of South Hams’ hidden gems. On the banks of the River Yealm, it is everything you’d expect from a picture postcard idyll and now a brand new development of three waterfront homes overlooking the river is putting it on the property map

Why buy in Newton Ferrers…

Situated on one side of Newton Creek with Noss Mayo on the other, Newton Ferrers is a quiet, unspoilt village with an increasingly popular harbour. Four hours from London and under 10 miles from Plymouth, Newton Ferrers has surprisingly easy road access for a rural location, much of which is owned by the National Trust.

What can I do in Newton Ferrers?

Newton Ferrers has a traditional village makeup of thatched cottages, shops, post office, church, local pub, marine services and a thriving yacht club. One of the most popular pubs in the area is the local Dolphin Inn, said to be as old as the village itself. With a newly re-equipped kitchen and mostly local brews, the Dolphin offers great food and drink by the water.

The River Yealm is an important area in terms of conservation. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Bass Hatchery and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and harbours many protected species. Surrounded by ancient woodlands, creeks, secluded beaches and dramatic cliffs, Newton Ferrers is packed with wildlife. Rare birds including the cirl bunting can be spotted from the many coastal paths and seals can also sometimes be seen basking on the rocks below.

The surrounding area

Historic Plymouth is a short drive away (20 minutes) and has plenty in the way of shopping and leisure facilities, theatres, hotels and restaurants, as well as national and international connections to the rest of the UK.

The fishing industry has had a revival in recent years and local vessels can be seen coming and going in Sutton Harbour on one side of the city, while on the other is the beautiful waterfront attraction of the Royal William dockyard with its Grade I-listed Naval buildings and mix of restaurants and bars.

Plymouth Hoe, home to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines also has stunning views of the harbour and the restored Grade II-listed art deco Lido. And, The Theatre Royal is one of the UK’s best regional theatres and hosts a wide range of excellent productions, comedy and music.

Dartmoor National Park is a 30-minute drive from Newton Ferrers and between the striking granite tors and the heather covered moorland are numerous tucked away villages such as Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Dunstone and Haytor.

South Hams coastline stretches from Dartmouth in the east to Plymouth in the west and with hundreds of miles of heritage footpath, it really is some of the most beautiful coastlines in the UK, attracting walking and sailing enthusiasts as well as the avid surfer. The Warren, which is a stretch of coastline nearby, has circular walks along the cliffs and through ancient woodlands.

South Hams has a number of well-known beaches such as Bantham and Bigbury-on-Sea, while the nearest sandy beaches to Newton Ferrers are Wembury, Bovisand and Mothecombe, which are popular destinations for families and surfers alike.

The ferry service, or more commonly known to the locals as the ‘Water Taxi’, is available during the summer for boat trips.
