4 Top Tips for Buying a New Bed
Does your uncomfortable, squeaky bed leave you tossing and turning at night? Chances are you’re in need of an upgrade…
We spend roughly a third of our lives in our beds, so it makes sense that we give our sleeping space the attention it deserves. Harry Thompson, director of Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Company, shares his top tips for picking the perfect bed…
1 Choose a long-lasting material
As the saying goes: a bed is for life, not just for Christmas. Ok, that might not be the exact saying, but if you want your bed to stand the test of time, there are some practical considerations to take into account.
Many people go for wooden or upholstered beds because they like the look, but they’re not always the wisest choice, explains Harry. “Wood expands and shrinks over time and is susceptible to breakage, while upholstered beds stain easily and can be difficult to clean, causing more hassle long-term.”
A solid iron bedstead, on the other hand, is extremely durable and low maintenance. “Our wrought iron bed frames come with a lifetime guarantee, so you can be sure they’ll last,” says Harry. “They might cost more than your average mass-produced metal bed, but you really do get what you pay for.”
2 Buy from a reputable company
Hands up who’s ever bought something that appeared good quality online or in the shop, only to be disappointed when you come to use it. Buying a bed is an investment in your health and wellbeing, so it pays to do your research and find a reputable company.
All of the luxury beds at Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Company are handmade by skilled craftspeople, which adds an extra layer of quality control, explains Harry. “We’re the only iron bed making company recognised by The Guild of Master Craftsmen and if there are any faults or problems, they are put right there and then in the workshop.”
“We also pride ourselves on our exceptional customer service,” he adds. “Buying a bed is very personal, which is why we’re always on hand to guide you through the buying journey.”
Another benefit from shopping at a smaller, independent company is that they tend to be more environmentally friendly. “We’re the only carbon neutral bed making business in the UK, so when you shop with us, you’re doing your bit for the planet too,” says Harry.
3 Get a custom-made bed
Bespoke beds that have been made to fit your needs and preferences can make all the difference when it comes to getting a good night’s rest.
“Buying a bed is not a one size fits all approach,” says Harry, “which is why we give our customers full design control. We can alter the height, width, length and even the headboard and tailboard.”
Of course, the appearance of the bed is important too. “With our custom beds you can choose from a range of styles to suit your tastes, whether you want a copper, nickel or brass bed frame, even down to the colour of the bed knobs,” says Harry.
4 Choose the right mattress
As a general rule, mattresses that contour to the shape of your body, provide adequate support and keep you cool will give you the best chance of an undisturbed slumber.
“I always recommend pocket sprung mattresses,” says Harry. “They are very responsive and move with your body while providing support in all the right places. Our mattresses are also made from environmentally-friendly natural fibres, which wicks away moisture to create a breathable, sleep-inducing cocoon.”
Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Company make luxury custom made beds in their workshop on the Sandringham Estate and have showroom in Swaffham, which is easily accessible via car or train from London.
