The third phase of Battersea Power Station’s redevelopment has been given the go ahead by Wandsworth Council.

The Resident:

Focussing on the South West corner of the site, plans for the Phase Three redevelopment include the creation of a new pedestrian high street from Battersea Park Road to the power station itself, as well as a new pedestrian subway underneath Battersea Park Road – both will lead to the new Northern Line tube station below.

The scheme will also create over 1,305 homes in this phase, including 103 that will be available for Wandsworth residents on low and middle incomes to rent at a reduced rate.

To the west of the high street will sit a new 17-storey wave-shaped building created by Foster and Partners. A large rooftop garden will extend the full length of the building. Inside the building, over 617 new homes will be created, with the bottom two floors facing the new high street and housing commercial space for shops, cafés and bars. Foster and Partners have also incorporated a 167-room hotel and health clinic in to the scheme.

On the East side, American architect Frank Gehry has designed five buildings, including the ‘Flower’ building. This will provide 688 homes, a gym and shops on the lower levels. ‘Both the Gehry and Fosters designs are outstanding. The architecture itself will be a great attraction and the shopping areas are of the very highest quality,’ says Wandsworth Council’s Planning Committee Chairman, Cllr Sarah McDermott.

There will also be a new public park. Prospect Park will feature a children’s playground and a community hub building. Completion of Phase Three is expected in 2020, when TFL’s Northern Line Extension is expected to be up and running.
