They've recorded film and TV soundtracks, sung on huge stages, and even backed rock stars including Noel Gallagher, Ray Davies and Take That.

Now, the Crouch End Festival Chorus are coming full circle from their humble origins in a church hall four decades ago, to perform the piece they performed first - Verdi's Requiem - at the BBC Proms.

The show on Tuesday, July 23 will be the choir's 18th appearance at the annual music festival, and the second time they have sung Verdi's classic at the Royal Albert Hall.

Back in 1984 it was tenors David Temple and John Gregson who stuck up 'Singers Wanted' posters seeking performers for the requiem as part of the Crouch End Arts Festival at Hornsey Town Hall - with rehearsals in the local Methodist church.

Now with 140 singers on its books, the choir has grown to become one of the country's leading choral ensembles with film and TV work ranging from Elton John biopic Rocketman, Ennio Morricone's score for The Mission and Danny Elfman's Edward Scissorhands to Dr Who and The Crown.

As CEFC director, Mr Temple has a 2018 MBE for services to music under his belt.

The chorus will be conducted for this year's prom by Ryan Bancroft alongside the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales.

Mr Temple said: “The Verdi Requiem is so wonderfully dramatic and so it no surprise that it is a firm favourite with performers and audiences alike.

"It is so touching that this Prom performance is 40 years since Crouch End Festival Chorus opened its door for the first time with this very piece. We have appeared regularly at the Proms since 2001 when we sang Scriabin’s Prometheus with the Kirov Orchestra and Valery Gergiev.

"It never ceases to be a thrill.”

CEFC's next solo concert is on Saturday, May 18 at Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Square performing Spem in alium by Tallis, Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G minor, and Allegri’s Miserere.

They will also appear on the Great Oak stage in Hyde Park this summer alongside star Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Compered by Highgate local Myleene Klass, the July 5 concert at BST Hyde Park will feature the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with the Crouch End Festival Chorus backing Bocelli in well-loved opera choruses and his popular repertoire.

Tickets for the BBC Proms go on sale on Saturday May 18. The concert series runs from Friday July 19 to Saturday September 14, 2024 with the CEFC Prom broadcast live on Radio 3 and available on BBC Four.
