As Christmas approaches a fantastic way to get into the festive spirit is gliding on ice within Somerset House's neoclassical surroundings.

Walk in and be greeted by the glorious 40ft Christmas tree, sparkling with decorations and the promise of a fun experience.

Skate at Somerset House with Moët & Chandon launched on November 15 turning its 18th century palace courtyard into a winter destination.

As we supped our complimentary glasses of champagne an aerial performer soared to the sky attached to a balloon which floated above the magnificent rink.

There was lots to explore. Guests were enjoying champagne and cocktails in the Skate Lounge where couples and friends sat under a Christmas wreath for perfect insta pics.

Here too the perfect ring-side seat, in from the cold, with music funnelled through from outside.

Over at Chalet Suisse by Jimmy Garcia there was a selection of tantalising food at the pop-up Alpine restaurant.

As we queued for the Swiss raclette of cheese and cured meat, trays of canapes were passed around with pumpkin pastries, game terrines, salmon and delicious carrots and blue cheese.

Next door a gift selection by Hotel Chocolat with tasty truffles for a try before you buy.

Pleasantly full we braced the ice. We quickly got our boots and stepped on to the rink where DJ Lexii spun contemporary tunes and pop bangers.

All levels were skating, some zooming past while others stayed close to the edge.

Families or those anxious they'll fall flat on their behind can get a Skate Mate, a dedicated ice marshal who can be booked to provide help for groups of three to 15 people.

Very young skaters can get aid from a penguin.

Somerset House with Moet & Chandon makes the perfect date night but also a spectacular fun outing for a group of friends.

There are sessions during the day but there is something very magical about the Skate Lates, the twinkling lights and the good feeling in the air.

Skate at Somerset House is open from 9am until late. Tickets start from £10/£7.50 adult/child.
