DOMAINE CINQ VENTS 2009 – MONTPEYROUX – LANGUEDOC AOP RED
SPECIAL PRICE £60 PER 6 BOTTLE CASE DIRECT FROM THE DOMAINE
Domaine Cinq Vents is a small, family run, estate in the Languedoc-Montpeyroux Appellation 30km west of Montpellier. It was started in 2008 by Clapham resident Christopher Johnson-Gilbert and since then he has worked closely with the well-regarded wine-maker Virgile Joly and has invested in converting the vineyard to organic production.
Currently the estate produces two wines each year, a Red and a Rose. A white wine will be added to the range from the 2014 vintage. The wine is made from a blend of Syrah and Grenache, from 30-year-old vines in the village of Montpeyroux, an area at the forefront of the new wave of high quality Languedoc wines and known for its exceptional terroir.
Jancis Robinson stated, in the Oxford Wine Companion, that Montpeyroux is the “highest named cru within the Coteaux du Languedoc”. Montpeyroux also falls within the Terrasses du Larzac area which was named Bettane & Dessauve’s French Appellation of the Year in 2011 and which has very recently been awarded its own individual Appellation status from 2014. Andrew Jefford has described the area as having some of the greatest terroir in the South of France.
Domaine Cinq Vents’ red has been extremely well received from the outset and the first two vintages of the red wine, 2009 and 2010 have won numerous awards.
In February 2013 the 2009 red was chosen by the French newspaper Le Monde as one of its five favourite wines from Montpeyroux, alongside wines from such well known and long established estates as Domaine D’Auphilac and Domaine Alain Chabanon. As they put it, “extraordinary wines coming from superb terroir”.
The 2009 red was awarded 16.5/20 by Jancis Robinson; won a gold medal at the Concours des Vins de la Vallée de l’Hérault 2012; has 1 star in the Guide Hachette 2013 (2 stars in the 2015 Guide); won silver at the International Wine Challenge 2012 and given a bronze medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2012.
The IWC Judging Panel 2012 said:
Very good fruit rich and intense, balanced palate, cedary palate with spicy flavour. Velvety type tannins with savoury finish
The DWWA Judging Panel in 2012 described this wine as:
Soft baked fruit, cassis-like on the nose and palate, with hints of wood, chocolate and black forest flavours
