Two great events at Eltham Palace this autumn give you chance to see the glamorous 1930s Art Deco palace in a whole new light
Over the weekend of Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September (10am-5pm), English Heritage’s Art Deco Fair returns to Eltham Palace with a huge range of specialist stalls for antique and reproduction pieces that will add a touch of Art Deco glamour to any home. The palace’s opulent setting is ideal to showcase jewellery, objets-d’arts, furniture, art nouveau and more from across the era at affordable prices.
Visitors can take a break from browsing the fair to get true inspiration from the Art Deco mansion, created by textile magnates Stephen and Virginia Courtauld in 1936. Built on the site of a medieval palace – the childhood home of Henry VIII, no less – the Courtauld’s transformed it into a superb millionaire’s mansion surrounded by lovely moated gardens. Eltham Palace’s distinctive glamour and style has made it one of the great Art Deco design classics, still relevant to a contemporary audience.
Then, on 2 October, the Eltham Palace Wedding Showcase allows couples searching for their dream venue to get a glimpse of making it one of London’s most elegant and sought-after wedding venue. A long established favourite for civil ceremonies and receptions, the palace will be part-stage set, showing a glamorous wedding ceremony, with dinner and dancing.
The free evening showcase takes place from 5pm until 9pm, with top suppliers including caterers, florists, lighting suppliers, photographers and videographers on hand to provide inspiration.
Members of the professional English Heritage Hospitality team will give couples full details of great value wedding packages available until March 2015. They include a £12,500 deal for 100 guests – with exclusive use of Eltham Palace from 3pm to midnight, flower arrangements, a sparkling wine and canapé reception, three course dinner with wine and fizz for the toast and an evening disco.
Couples can tour through the Art Deco rooms – including the spectacular coffee and cream circular Entrance Hall, a uniquely special place to exchange vows – and view the medieval Great Hall, where King Henry VIII once feasted and which hosts larger civil ceremonies and celebratory receptions for up to 300 guests.
