The Drive-In in Pictures: ‘Isolation Entertainment’ Arrives in London

We’ve gone back to the future. The drive-in cinema, popularised in 50s America and romanticised since Grease became The Word, is now summer 2020’s hottest ticket as we all seek new COVID-secure forms of entertainment

@TheDriveIn by Mainstage Festivals, which is behind international events like Snowboxx, launched its drive-in cinema in Blackheath on 6 July as part of a national tour running all summer.

As well as blockbuster movies, @TheDriveIn also entertains visitors with comedy, music and bingo and dance-cam games hosted by its sponsor Suzuki, plus there’s Americana-themed food and drink served up car-side by delivery app Just Eat.

But this is just one of some nine drive-in cinemas setting up in London over the summer, from Celestial Cinema in Bromley to Sunset Cinema in Acton, The Luna Drive-In Cinema in Hendon and Rotherhithe, and Rooftop Film Club’s Drive in Cinema at Alexandra Palace. Find details of these drive-ins and more here.
