TOM DAVIES IS WELCOMED HOME AFTER ROUND THE WORLD CYCLE RIDE

Teenager Tom Davies was greeted by family and friends outside his Battersea home on Sunday after completing his cycle ride around the world

Londoner Tom Davies might have just made it into the record books. The 19-year-old finished 18,000 mile cycle ride round the world on Sunday. It’s believed he is the youngest person to ever complete this distance without any support.

Tom, who started the cycle ride on 17 January 2015, pedalled around 100 miles a day in order to make the journey in under 200 days. After seven months of cycling across Europe, Asia, Australasia and North America, Davies was welcomed home by over 100 supporters when he arrived at his home in Battersea.

‘It is currently feeling a bit surreal, and for the last couple of weeks, I was deliberately trying not to think about it, in order to keep focused on the last days,’ he said at the end of the challenge.

‘I have been overwhelmed by the hospitality of people all around the world which is something I didn’t necessarily expect but has made it much more rewarding,’ he added. ‘I am delighted that the three charities will benefit from my trip, and cannot express how grateful I am for all the support from my family, friends and almost everyone who has heard about it.’

During the trip, Tom kept his family and friends up to date with his progress on his blog. He has raised over £40,000 for charity, which will be shared between Sohana Research Fund, Prostate Cancer UK and Carney’s Community.

‘I am delighted that the three charities will benefit from my trip, and cannot express how grateful I am for all the support from my family, friends and almost everyone who has heard about it,’ Tom said.

As for his future plans? Tom will be heading off to university this autumn.

‘I’m not planning any more adventures at this moment, but looking forward to starting Loughborough University in September,’ he explained. ‘And I definitely want to keep pushing on my cycling. This journey has not made me want to sell my bike – if anything, I want to do more cycling, but without carrying my tent and all my worldly goods with me.’
