Another of London’s favourite department stores reveals its Christmas windows to help us all get into the festive spirit… This time it’s Liberty, unveiling its Nutcracker masterpiece in partnership with The Royal Ballet

Liberty is taking London shoppers on an enchanting journey, retelling one of the world’s favourite festive tales – The Nutcracker – through its Christmas window displays. In partnership with The Royal Ballet, the spellbinding Peter Wright production has inspired each of the windows at the front of the store on Great Marlborough Street.

Each window features a key scene from the fabled ballet, re-imagined through Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs with an added sprinkling of inimitable Liberty magic. For the first time ever, Liberty’s Christmas windows will feature no merchandise and will be devoted solely to The Nutcracker’s eminent Christmas style.

‘Recent Christmas themes at Liberty have taken on a more conceptual and alternative appearance,’ says Liz Silvester, Head of Visual Identity at Liberty. ‘This year it was decided that music, dance and drama would be used to help bring out the spirit and charm of an exciting and emotive Christmas time: The Nutcracker was the perfect choice!’

The Nutcracker is synonymous with The Royal Ballet and one of the best loved works the world over

‘I’m very excited that we are working with Liberty to celebrate Christmas with The Nutcracker,’ added Kevin O’Hare, Director of the Royal Ballet. ‘The Nutcracker is synonymous with The Royal Ballet and one of the best loved works the world over. For many people it’s the ballet that was their first contact with the art form and has inspired them to explore other great classics.

‘With its familiar score, a Christmas tree that grows on stage and a whole host of magical characters including the mysterious magician Drosselmeyer and the iconic Sugar Plum Fairy, it is a work that every young ballet dancer dreams of being part of. To be bringing The Nutcracker to life in the windows of Liberty at Christmas through this new partnership is fantastic and a wonderful way to share our work with many more people. ‘

The Nutcracker will be performed at the Royal Opera House from 23 November to 7 January with a live cinema screening on 8 December at 7.30pm. See
