Five ways to keep the kids happy during May half term in south east London

1 Discover With Darwin

Head for the Home of Charles Darwin, Down House, in Kent to explore evolution at its birthplace. Delve into the mysteries of science to discover why giraffes have long necks, why penguins can’t fly and why monkeys have tails. Grab your lab coat and dust off your microscope to find the answers. Tuesday 27 May until Friday 30 May, 10am-5pm. Adults £10.30, children £6.20, concs £9.30, family £26.80, members free (includes entry to the house and grounds, plus an additional £1 per person).

2 Animate This!

Celebrate the opening of the ORNC Goes To The Movies exhibition and try your hand at making everything from zoetropes to digital animation in a free drop-in workshop on Wednesday 28 May, 1pm-4pm. Free. Suitable for ages 5+.

3 Family Art Fun

The Horniman Museum & Gardens is running free art activities for families with children aged 3+ every day from 26 May until 30 May (11am-2.45pm). Inspired by springtime and the Chelsea Fringe Festival, kids can create beautiful paper flowers that ‘grow’ out of the paper cup (Growing Flowers Chelsea Fringe, Monday-Wednesday) and a little section of tree trunk, complete with its mini inhabitants (Nature Nests, Thursday- Friday). Free. Banded entry every 45 minutes.
