There’s no shame in feeling awkward after 18 months of social distancing – no matter how keen you are to dance the night away again. We all know how you feel.

After living in elastic-waisted clothing for so long and hanging out with the dog most nights, it’s no wonder most of us are feeling apprehensive about dressing up, busting a move and talking to strangers – let alone flirting with one.

In fact, 83 per cent of Brits have said they’re feeling rusty about getting back on the dancefloor after such a long hiatus, according to research by Groupon.

Fortunately, Groupon and Drag Race UK Season One queen Cheryl Hole have teamed up to host Yass Queen! Get Your Glad Drag On, a masterclass to calm those pre-club jitters and and prep you for your comeback.

Here, The Resident catches up with Cheryl Hole to find out how she’s feeling ahead of nightclubs opening up again.

How are you feeling about hitting the clubs again?

I’m super excited to be back on a dancefloor. Nightlife and live entertainment is the last thing to reopen and I think it’s well overdue for a good party!

What’s your favourite London club?

I always have a soft spot in my heart for Heaven nightclub at Charing Cross. When I was at university it was my stomping ground and would go see all the Ru girls from America there when they came over. To suddenly being on the other side and performing there feels like coming full circle, which is why I adore Heaven so much.

Top tips for getting disco ready?

We’re not gonna be size queens anymore. If you’re feeling out of practice walking in big heels, down size a couple inches and feel confident and ready to twirl on that dance floor.

It’s also been a while since some of us have put on makeup that needs to last longer than a 20 minute zoom call. If you want your makeup to last the night, you must set everything. Set your eyeliner with eyeshadow and your foundation with a full coverage powder. Also, setting spray is the way forward!

Favourite pick up line and flirting tips?

I definitely think pick up lines are meant to be left in the books and are a thing of the past. It’s all about carrying yourself like absolute royalty and drawing people into your energy.

It’s also key to be good with eye contact. Eyes are the first thing you see, so you want to make sure the first conversation you have is with them your eyes. In the words of Tyra Banks, ‘smizing’!

What advice do you have for those want to get back out there, but are feeling out of practice following 18 months of social distancing?

Remember why you go out – to have fun! No one is going to be judging anything, they’re just back out to have a fabulous time. Do whatever makes you feel confident, whether it’s makeup or feeling comfortable in flats. Do it for you!

What can we expect from your masterclass?

Groupon’s Get Your Glad Drag On will help Brits prep for their first big night out since forever! You can expect a lot of tips that only us crafty drag queens know, silly things that you wouldn’t think to do but we’ve tried it, tested it and proven it works! Plus we’re gonna have a party and send you off ready to hit up the clubs and bars feeling like absolute divas!

Get your Glad Drag On takes place on Thursday July 22 at Pineapple Studios. Places are limited, so attendees will be selected at random and announced on Tuesday, July 20. Register your interest here
