Backyard Cinema, one of London’s most successful pop-up cinema experiences, recently opened the doors to its first permanent home. Located in a former television studios in Wandsworth, the immersive cinema experts have unleashed their most impressive offering yet – and they’ve just announced their Christmas film line-up…
Backyard Cinema’s new 250-seat cinematic experience at Capital Studios in Wandsworth is not only their biggest site to date, it’s also their first permanent site, and offers street food, cocktails on tap, a craft beer bar, live music and more.
The iconic former television studios, located in the recently transformed Ram Quarter in Wandsworth, have played host to music legends The Beatles and David Bowie, as well as the once hugely popular Ready, Steady, Cook – the BBC game show where chefs would race the clock to create the best recipes from mystery ingredients (which, incidentally, is making a comeback).
The studios have now been brought back to life to offer an immersive, multi-sensory cinematic playground, allowing Backyard Cinemas to upscale their popular Winter Night Garden screenings, where visitors will step through a magical wardrobe into an enchanted forest to find the Lost Theatre.
You can relax on Backyard’s famous giant bean bags and enjoy a programme of new releases, sing-a-longs and old favourites, including Aladdin, Rocketman, Harry Potter, True Romance, Dirty Dancing, The Greatest Showman and Moulin Rouge.
Plus, there’s the newly announced Christmas film line-up. Kicking off from 1 November, the festive films will be shown on the cinema’s second screen, which is currently under construction but will soon emerge as ‘Christmas at the Snow Kingdom’.
‘Enter the kingdom via a hidden entrance, navigate a magical ball pit river and find the secret password to discover a cosy Christmas cinema that’ll give you all the festive feels’
Visitors will enter the kingdom via a hidden entrance, navigate a magical ball pit river and find the secret password before discovering a cosy Christmas cinema that’ll give you all the festive feels. Films include Elf, The Holiday, Home Alone, Die Hard (yes, it is a Christmas film), Love Actually and many more.
Backyard Cinema’s new home at Capital Studios expands on its previous offerings with an all-day bar serving cocktails on tap, beer and artisan pizza, live music throughout the weekends, as well as a 10 tap craft beer bar from Gipsy Hill Brewing Co and a heated alfresco courtyard.
There are also residencies for fried chicken aficionados Mother Clucker, and Honest Burgers, which is launching a bespoke Backyard Burger, and you can also enjoy the UK’s only plant-based soft scoop ice cream from Dappa.
Originally created in founder and creative director Dominic Davies’ back garden – hence the name – Backyard Cinema became a roaming, pop-up cinema that rapidly gained a reputation for offering some of the best themed seasons of films in London, with locations including Winterville, Camden’s Roundhouse and Winter Wonderland.
‘Karaoke booths and theatrical cocktail experiences are on the not-too-distant horizon, and a local ticket discount will be offered’
Davies has also let on that karaoke booths and theatrical cocktail experiences are on the not-too-distant horizon, and a local ticket discount will be offered to those in the area.
Forming part of Greenland’s wider Ram Quarter development at the old Young’s Brewery site, the new Backyard Cinema site will sit alongside the completed first phase of new homes, retail and restaurant space in Wandsworth town centre.
The landmark mixed-use development is transforming the historic 4.5-acre Ram Brewery site, famed for being Britain’s oldest continuously operating brewery.
