This December, Christie’s is holding a themed-auction entitled all Creatures Great and Small, which celebrates the animal as artistic inspiration, selling everything from paintings of domestic pets to rare, unusual and mythical sculptures. The sale at Christie’s South Kensington on 17th December 2014 takes visitors on a tour across the breadth of the animal kingdom – from the farm and woodland, to the sea and the sky, to the jungle and even the arctic tundra. Prices start at an affordable £400 and are expected to reach £80,000 for some of the bigger pieces, such as a larger than life-size Silver Back Gorilla by Turner Prize nominated artist David Mach. The two-meter tall gorilla is the third of an edition of three, the first of which holds the Guinness World Record for the largest art installation made entirely from coat hangers. Other highlights at Creatures Great and Small include Graham Sutherland’s Owl, and a bronze peacock by sculptor Geoffrey Dashwood.
