With picturesque mountains covered in glistening white snow, the Swiss Alps offer some of the most beautiful winter views nature has to offer. Escape congested London for the soothing, crisp air of Switzerland’s mountain village of Andermatt

The sights from the huge windows of the Glacier Express on the two hour train journey from Zürich Airport to Andermatt, located in the Ursern Valley to the south of Switzerland, are beautifully surreal. Like all things Swiss, the Glacier Express boasts a high level of space, comfort and cool Scandi design unlike anything you’d find on London’s tube. It’s like being immersed in David Attenborough’s Planet Earth II as you glide along the sides of mountains, taking in breathtaking views of green and snow covered cliffs with fluffy clouds.

There isn’t a place more luxurious to stay than The Chedi Andermatt, famous worldwide for its brooding Asian-Alpine chic interiors and striking jagged design by acclaimed architect Jean-Michel Gathy. Once inside, you’re welcomed by thousands of gleaming Swarovski crystals hanging from the ceiling. The open-plan layout is filled with furs and leathers – Scandi hygge luxury at its best.

Our suites featured turntable baths, huge showers and plenty of tech controlled by a central system on your own shiny iPad. The sliding bathroom doors allow you to join it together with the bedroom so that you can marvel at the mountain views from the tub with a glass of red wine. The beds in each room are made out of horse hair – a bizarre concept until you take a lie down on one fall asleep for hours. Like magic.

After a long journey, sinking into the plush sofas in the hotel’s lounge complete with a warming stove fire is the ideal way to relax, or you can hit the tranquil spa with the outdoor Andermatt scenery in clear view from the tall windows by the indoor pool.

Taking a moment to enjoy the striking alpine views from your balcony in the morning is essential. Have a breakfast hamper delivered to your room and enjoy a warming coffee with those panoramic mountain views.

Wrapping up in one of The Chedi Andermatt’s soft blankets and heading outside for a historic tour of the village will have you bright eyed and bushy tailed by lunch time. From the various myths surrounding the dramatic Andermatt weather to the area’s first settlers, let a local guide enlighten you with their encyclopedic local knowledge.

As a place that’s famous for its appearance in the classic Bond film, Goldfinger, you can even hire a vintage car and take the 007 route around town, immersing yourself in the real life setting where the iconic car chase took place.
