The lull of October, with the overindulgence of Christmas looming, is the time to prioritise your fitness goals. To see real changes, expert guidance in resistance training is the way forward – whether you prefer the energy of group training, or opt for one-to-one sessions.
Luckily, there’s a new gym in town offering just that, and after trialling one of their group personal training sessions – which run three times daily – we’re convinced that it offers one of the most effective workouts around.
Greenwich Fitness & Performance is just a few minutes drive from North Greenwich tube station. It has a friendly team and a community feel, and is a welcoming space for men and women alike. You can even sign up with your other half with the For Him & For Her package.
‘We’ve got a large base of female clients already, but a lot of people misunderstand what kind of gym we are,’ explains founder Adam Ringshall. ‘It’s not just for the men.’ As well as seasoned gym-goers, they attract those who are new to fitness, and who might be nervous or unsure.
‘I’d say 90% of people who come to the gym want to change their body composition,’ Ringshall tells me. ‘Strength training is so important. I love the quote “strong is the new skinny” – building lean muscle tissue is the number one way to burn body fat. Women aren’t going to bulk up like men, because they don’t have the same testosterone levels.’

I left my group personal training session with strength and conditioning trainer Shahbaz Hasan feeling pumped – and stronger – after a mere 45 minutes. While Hasan was keen for us to push ourselves to the limit, he was also quick to offer alternative exercises and weights for those of us who were struggling.
The sessions are based around three primary components: resistance and strength, high-intensity intervals to raise the metabolism and burn fat, and then core exercises, to tighten and tone.
‘Every session is different,’ Hasan says. ‘You never do the same workout, so you never get bored. It’s always fun, challenging and high energy. Your body will keep responding – unlike with repetitive gym classes, which your body will adapt to.’
Personal training is tailored around specific needs and goals, and is more of an investment – but Ringshall stresses that he is committed to ensuring results for each and every client. The Christmas preparation starts here.
