Need a complete break away, and one that is completely cut off from reality? Well, you’re in luck with The Scarlet in Cornwall
Words: Bethan Andrews
It might be a cliché, but words honestly can’t describe the feelings evoked by The Scarlet in Mawgan Porth. Situated in an imposing position on a cliff top overhanging the beach, the hotel focuses on making guests feel as though they are in their own private home as opposed to being guests in a corporate business. It is perfect for those craving some serious r’n r, something really very special and within only a few hours drive of the city.
The hotel sits in a relatively modest plot, but one that offers all you could ever wish for in beauty and activity. The indoor swimming pool is simply stunning, with floor to ceiling windows offering unparalleled sea, sand, cliff and sky views. The wellbeing and spa offerings are notably extensive too, with unlimited use of meditation areas, yoga spaces and chill-out Zen zones additional to the paid-for spa options. It’s refreshing to know that you can feel as though you’re having a spa weekend, even though not necessarily paying for specific treatments. Plus, it might explain why I left The Scarlet feeling the most relaxed I’ve felt in a very long time.
And the bedrooms certainly help toward this as well. As an eco hotel, everything within the walls of The Scarlet is environmentally friendly and the rooms give off a certain sense of natural harmony. The bathrooms were designed to keep the connection with the fantastic view, even when brushing your teeth. In most cases, this means the bath is open to the bedroom and the loo and shower are behind an opaque glass screen that is not quite floor-to-ceiling. Every room boasts its own individual outside space, ranging from private courtyard garden terraces to balconies.
Though not entirely cut off from reality – Newquay town centre is a short drive away – the experience makes you feel as far away as possible. There are many activities on offer in nearby Newquay and Watergate Bay, but when there are gardens that open out directly onto the expansive beach plus outdoor reed-filtered freshwater pool, cliff top hot tubs, sea-view sauna and numerous reclining seating options, well, why on earth would you want to leave?
Here, you can enjoy the simple view of nature while enjoying the hotel’s Anytime Anywhere concept – anything you could wish for, wherever in the hotel you are so there is never any need to lift a finger.
The food is certainly something and, although quite a rare feeling to have after spending the weekend in an indulgent stay, it will not leave you feeling too unhealthy. The Scarlet’s philosophy is to treat every guest as an individual and this comes across in every aspect of the restaurant – all requirements will be met. With sustainability and wellbeing at the core, breakfast is a must including healthy smoothies and homemade granolas but there is always the Cornish breakfast for those craving something a little heartier.
Whether you are planning a girl’s trip away or a romantic long weekend, go and take yourself to Mawgan Porth, and create some unforgettable scarlet moments. After all, there’s a reason it is voted into the UK’s Top 20 Hotels by Condé Nast readers…
