Travel: 8 Reasons Why Miami is the Best Winter Getaway

There’s nothing like winter’s icy chill to get you motivated to travel to warmer climates. Miami is becoming an increasingly popular spot to jet set to during the colder months due to its fabulous beaches, buzzing nightlife and its balmy mid-20s temperatures.

Here are eight great reasons why Miami is the best winter getaway you could imagine…

1 Miami Beach
If sparkly beaches and glittering white sand weren’t reason enough to lure you to southern Florida, we should also point out that New Year’s Eve on Miami Beach is a party worth attending. From yachts to amazing over-the-top hotel parties, there’s no wrong way to bring in the new year when you’re vacationing in Miami.

2 Art Basel
Calling all art aficionados! If you haven’t heard of the annual art fair Art Basel, then now’s the time to read up. A literal ‘who’s who’ of the art world, Art Basel brings in art installations and exhibits from all over the world every December. Don’t miss out to see some unique art pieces and potentially rub shoulders with some celebrities as well.

3 Hang 10
If you’re more of the sporty type, then Miami is the place for you. Hurricane season ends around the end of November, so grab your surfboard and head on down to South Pointe. The tide naturally breaks against the pier here and creates some excellent waves. Visit in the winter to take advantage of the swells before spring flatness arrives.

4 Art Deco Architecture
With a mix of warming sunshine and cool ocean breezes, Miami in the winter is the perfect time to wander aimlessly. Take a stroll along Ocean Drive and soak in all the stunning Art Deco architecture and vintage cars that seem to transport you back in time. This area is particularly popular with celebrities. You might even brush shoulders with Drake or Rick Ross, who are often spotted here.

5 The Florida Keys
Miami is just a hop, skip and a jump away from the equally famous Florida Keys. So if you ever find yourself bored in Miami (which is hard to imagine), you can always take a mini road trip to Key Largo. You can go scuba diving in John Pennekamp Park, home to the underwater statue Christ of the Abyss, chow down on a slice of key lime pie or dine on some freshly caught mahi-mahi.

6 Feel the Heat
Love sports? Miami has you covered. Basketball season is in full swing during the winter and the Miami Heat team is worth watching. Check out the impressive American Airlines Arena, grab some popcorn and a beer and be a part of Heat Nation!

7 Catch Some Culture
You may not associate Miami with opera culture but you’d be surprised at the amount of music, art, and dance that is available in the city. The Adrienne Arsht Centre’s calendar in the winter months is packed with operas, ballets and concertos to attend.

8 Sweet Treats
Last but certainly not least, no trip to Miami is complete without a stop at Knaus Berry Farm. Particularly known for their drool-worthy cinnamon rolls, a stop here is a must when visiting Miami no matter what time of year you come.
