If you’re in the market for a new club membership, The South Kensington Club may just be what you’re looking for. Taking its name from its West London address, the club sits between Hyde Park and the glorious museums on Exhibition Road. And taking a lead from the success that Grace Belgravia found, The South Kensington Club will be championing the modern woman’s holy trinity, mind, body and spirit.
The private members club, which opens in February, is discreetly located in a former Georgian music hall with a colourful history. It was once home to Pineapple Dance Studios, then became Ronnie Wood’s notorious Harrington Club; attracting performers from Eric Clapton and Kim Cattrall to Bob Dylan and Rod Stewart. While the clubs rooms extend into Queensberry Mews, the first London home and studio of Francis Bacon.
The heritage of The South Kensington Club has been incorporated into the design of it, and the result promises to be an “elegant, unpretentious, homely environment… to provide a place for reflection, relaxation and respite.”
Facilities extend beyond the usual gym, spa, yoga combination. There’s a salt-water Watsu pool, for example, private Russian Banyas suites with plunge pools and Turkish hammams, plus the option for tailor-made fitness programmes for every member.
Educational workshops, lectures and live music events will feed the mind, while the Voyager Club travel concierge will feed your wanderlust by organising adventures in far flung corners of the earth – Antarctica, Mongolia or the North Pole perhaps.
Actual food comes from the Club’s all-day restaurant which takes its lead from the healthy Mediterranean diet, serving fresh produce with big nutritional value. There will also be a Café selling fresh juices, seasonal soups, salads and snacks for Members and the public on the go. Of course, there will be gluten-free and vegetarian options too.
