1 Circus flexibility courses
If you’re seeking something truly different, join the circus. Aircraft Circus in Woolwich, as well as courses in the flying trapeze, silks and more, runs Flexibility courses to help aerial performers control the lines of their body and range of flexibility, but all are welcome. The next six-week course runs Wednesdays at 9-10pm from 26 October (£70, drop-ins, £15). If you really want to up the ante, there’s also a Contortion class…
2 Body Rolling
This innovative workout uses balls to stretch muscles, realign and create space in the joints. The body wants to correct itself and let go of bad patterns of movement, and this one-day workshop on 11 October (2-5pm, £30) at The Shala centre in West Norwood will teach you the key sequences and help you understand your body’s natural logic. The effects of Body Rolling are immediate and anyone can take part, but it’s especially good for yogis, dancers and athletes.
3 Body Barre
Based at Victor’s Lab at The Bussey Building, Peckham, The Barre Project’s Body Barre classes blend ballet, Pilates and yoga for an effective workout. Classes focus on alignment, core strength, flexibility and muscle tone, running every Tuesday (6-7pm, £7). Victor’s Lab hosts some novel yoga classes too, including Punk Yoga, a Dru Yoga class with a soundtrack ranging from acoustic punk to some more ambient tracks for sequences designed to give you a boost (Wednesdays, 7-8pm, £10).
4 Boxing Yoga
For a challenging class that improves strength and flexibility, try Boxing Yoga with south east London-based Bodyshot PT. Fusing boxing techniques with poses from Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, it gives all the major muscle groups a workout. It’s pretty tough, with lots of planking – on one arm – giving the core, arms and shoulders a heck of a workout. One-to-one classes only, priced £49 per hour.

5 Adult Ballet
You probably won’t make prima ballerina, but it’s never too late to take up a tutu. As well as being a good workout, ballet helps improve posture, muscle tone, flexibility and core strength. Blackheath Ballet offers Ballet Burn (drop-ins, £15; six lessons, £72), South London Dance Studios in Herne Hill offers Adult Ballet Tone (£124, 12 weeks) and Push Studios in East Dulwich offers Ballet Sculpt and Ballet Blast (£10).
