5 STAR SPA: THE INTERCONTINENTAL LONDON AT THE O2

Something extraordinary has emerged behind the O2. On the banks of the Thames on Greenwich Peninsula, facing Canary Wharf’s ever-changing skyline, the 18-storey InterContinental London at the O2 has sprung up in full five-star glory, with a beautiful spa to boot…

Words: Trish Lesslie

With a luxurious air to rival the swankiest of West End hostelries, the Intercontinental London at the O2 comes complete with a sumptuous spa, which is thankfully open to day guests. Called simply, The Spa, it was blissfully deserted during my recent mid-week visit – so much so that I pretty much had the spacious changing room, 17m swimming pool, steam room and sauna all to myself.

The design takes in exotic textures and luxurious materials such as gold gilt and blue pearl granite while the treatment menu offers up everything from bespoke facials to body scrubs. After changing into my on-trend slate-grey fluffy robe and pool-friendly sandals in the spacious, sparklingly new changing room (plenty of lockers; Espa toiletries), I had a divinely deep tissue massage, administered by head therapist Hannah, who skilfully kneaded away muscular aches and pains as my body surrendered itself into the ridiculously comfortable couch.

THE BABY SPA: THE SECRET TO SLEEPING BABIES

*

There are eight treatment rooms at The Spa in all, some doubles, all minimally decorated in calming, soft tones. The relaxation room is well stocked with a wide variety of teas and refreshing cucumber and mint or orange water on tap, while there are plenty of recliners, complete with throws and blankets in which to swaddle yourself post-treatment.

The pool area, bathed in natural light from a vast window, is the real show-stopper

There’s a well-equipped gym on the lower level, but it’s the pool area, bathed in natural light from a vast window, that’s the real show-stopper. Surrounded by wide loungers, the pristine piscine is delightfully warm. I took full advantage of the hydrotherapy area and its user-controlled water jets, powerful enough
to pound out any muscle tension.

Rosy cheeked and loose-limbed, I rounded off my relaxation with a tasty afternoon tea in the Meridian Lounge overlooking the river, basking in my good fortune at being one of the first to discover this high-end haven of pampering. Go before it gets as packed as it deserves to be.
