The Resident asks Dr Firas Al-Niaimi, a prominent UK Dermatologist and Medical Director at sk:n, the UK’s leading skin clinic, for expert advice on the treatments and products that will leave us looking and feeling our best throughout the harsh winter months

What treatments will help to promote healthy, glowing skin throughout winter?
A light chemical peel such as a Glycolic Peel would work well at this time of year. The benefits of a Glycolic peel include cell regeneration and collagen production. The peel penetrates beneath the surface of the skin and can help treat fine lines, wrinkles and blemishes, as well as sun spots and acne scars.

The weather outside is frightful! And my central heating is on permanently. How do I avoid drying out and irritating my skin without dialing down my thermostat?
It’s really important to keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water and to use a good so-called ‘humectant’ moisturiser, which retains moisture and water in your skin. A particular favourite of mine is sk:n Hydrator for Oily/Blemish Prone skin which is a great hydrator for all skin types, and is especially great for acne-prone skin.

I may have overindulged on chocolate and cheese boards over the Christmas period… what effect does dairy have on our skin, and how can we combat this?
In some individuals (not everyone) excessive consumption of dairy products can cause a flare up of existing acne or lead to the development of few so-called ‘pimples’. The use of an exfoliant wash and a cream that contains vitamin A can help. Sk:n offers a range of treatments for acne – our highly trained practitioners will talk through you through the options in your tailored consultation. Treatments include Salicylic acid peel, which is an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent, and Isolaz, which is designed to extract skin debris, bacteria and excess sebum from pores. A Microdermabrasion treatment is also very effective to unblock pores.

How can I improve the general look and feel of my skin, without incurring any down time?
The Dermapen revitalise treatment is a type of microneedling that targets deeper layers of the skin for a rejuvenating effect. Tiny needles in a hand held pen device cause microscopic punctures in the skin, prompting your skin into repair mode, encouraging the production of collagen to renew the skin that has experienced trauma. Aside from some redness post treatment, there is minimal downtime and one week after your treatment your increased collagen levels will peak. Your skin is likely to feel tighter and firmer, plus it will look brighter and fresher.
