Would you swim in a pool suspended 35 metres up in the air? A new development linking two apartment blocks in London’s new Nine Elms district will let residents take a dip 10 storeys high

Ballymore, the developers behind Embassy Gardens in South West London’s Nine Elms, has unveiled plans for a glass-bottomed swimming pool suspended 35 metres above ground.

The aptly named ‘sky pool’ will link two luxury apartment buildings at the 10th storey, allowing residents to swim from one building to the next.

The world’s first ‘sky pool’

It’s an exciting new addition to the London skyline, and the brand says this unique design concept is a world first.

As well as a totally transparent 25-metre pool, the development will also include a sky deck with a spa, summer bar and Orangery, where residents can enjoy views of the nearby Houses of Parliament. Designed by Arup Associates, Ballymore has described the project as an ‘aquarium’ rather than a swimming pool, with glass that is 20cm thick.

‘The experience of the pool will be truly unique, it will feel like floating through the air in central London’

Sean Mulryan, chairman and CEO of Ballymore has explained his vision behind the design, which stemmed from ‘a desire to push the boundaries in the capability of construction and engineering’.

‘I wanted to do something that had never been done before,’ he added. ‘At Ballymore we like to push the boundaries on all aspects of design, the Sky Pool’s transparent structure is the result of significant advancements in technologies over the last decade. The experience of the pool will be truly unique, it will feel like floating through the air in central London.’
