AREA FOCUS: SURREY QUAYS

Chris Early, Sales Manager at KFH Surrey Quays, on why the riverside area is one to watch

Best Known For SE16 is best known for its modern architecture and excellent transport links. The area is steeped in history and tradition and has changed immensely over the last 25 years due to the London Docklands Development Programme, however, if you know where to look, evidence of its historic past can be found all around. Warehouses, cobbled streets and historic docks can be explored easily on foot and the Thames River Path meanders right through the postcode, offering dramatic views of Canary Wharf from a variety of locations.

The Future The future of the area is very exciting. Significant development has taken place very recently and there remains plenty of unexplored potential with many developers capitalising on these sites. Plans are in place to extend and improve the existing shopping centre as well as to develop the Harmsworth Quay printing press and Decathlon site. The introduction of some more family orientated facilities and eateries and the continued improvement of the schools means that people are putting roots down in the area and as a result it has gentrified greatly.

Gourmet Recommendations You will need to know where to go but there a couple of fantastic local spots in the area. For something to eat, The Mayflower and The Ship Whale combine great food and fantastic beers and ales with wonderful outside space and atmosphere. The Yellow House and Blacksmiths Arms are also well worth a visit. For a drink in the summer there is no better place than The Wibbly Wobbly; moored on Greenland Dock this floating pub offers great beer, atmosphere and scenery.

The Property Market The property market in Surrey Quays is very busy. There is an excellent mix of properties in the area from one bedroom flats all the way up to river facing penthouses and town houses, with a good percentage of these being buy-to-let properties to serve the young professional demographic. Due to the great transport links, many of our buyers work in The City and Canary Wharf and the river-fronted, portered blocks fit their requirements perfectly.

I Love it Because You can be sitting at your desk in Canary Wharf and then 10 minutes later be petting sheep at Surrey Docks Farm or enjoying the open spaces of Southwark Park. There is a lot of potential in the area and as more retail and commercial space is introduced people are becoming more inclined to socialise locally rather than travel. We are seeing people invest heavily in houses and looking at SE16 as a place to bring up their families, which secures the long term identity of the postcode.
