Louise Downing, founder of new interiors e-commerce website, Spotdeco.com, on how shopping for your home can now help you give back to the neighbourhood
Happy homes are created from the inside out and outside in, yet too often we fail to look beyond our own four walls to the streets, parks and people around us. What if we could shop for home at the same time as giving back to our local area, without spending a penny extra?
On 1 July 2016, furniture and homeware website Spotdeco launched its Charity Begins at Home initiative, that will see 50% of revenue invested in charitable projects in each customer’s local area. Selling items from well-known brands including John Lewis, Anthropologie, OKA and M&S, for everything you buy, the company will support a good cause in your neighbourhood.
The initiative is being trialled in London where customers can choose from five social and environmental projects. These include granting the wishes of children with life-limiting illnesses, developing green urban spaces and fruit orchards, a pop-up language cafe, edible playgrounds in schools, and saving declining bee populations. This means Londoner’s can even visit a project and pick-up a pot of local honey!
Following Brexit, we all need to pull together to create strong, cohesive communities. This starts at home and with Spotdeco’s initiative, everyone can chip in to make our local areas, our streets and parks, happier and safer places for our friends, family and children. By supporting projects instead of organisations and by backing local, the initiative brings transparency and tangibility to charitable giving, so that customers can see exactly where and how funds are being used.
Spotdeco plans to roll the scheme out countrywide over the coming months, so that anyone, anywhere, can shop for their home at the same time as enhancing their neighbourhood. A little goes a long way and small changes by the masses can drive huge, long-lasting impacts, so let’s look outside our own four walls and work together to make the world a happier place, mug by mug, kettle by kettle, candle by candle!
