Hating on your commute is nothing new, so it’s little surprise that there’s a growing trend for minimising commute times by moving closer to work
The appeal of the suburbs is clear – more space and, in theory, better value for money. But the rising costs of our train services, coupled with overcrowding and a fall in the quality of the service, means people are starting to re-evaluate, especially with new housing developments launching regularly in central London.
Ahead of Walk to Work Day on Friday 5 April 2019, research by the Canary Wharf Group, one of London’s leading developers, found that 67% of Londoners would be happier living nearer the workplace, and 61% would consider actually moving home.
The average Londoner’s commute lasts 74 minutes, but regular delays on public transport and congestion on the roads means that they often arrive at work stressed and/or late. According to the survey, 65% of Londoners find themselves in a worse mood following their commute, compared to the national average of 37%.

In fact, 70% of respondents living in a UK town or city say they would be happier living closer to their place of work, compared to just 8% of those living in a small village.
Proximity to the workplace now ranks among the top factors when looking for a new home, with 43% of Londoners saying it’s important, alongside local amenities (48%), having a garden (44%), proximity to family & friends (40%), good local schools (36%) and things to do (31%).
A quarter (26%) of those living in the capital also said they would consider walking more of their journey to work if the air quality in the city were improved – a much higher concern than the UK average of 15%.
