The Bingham in Richmond has launched a new ‘mystery menu’, comprising the best of British seasonal produce with an exciting range of drinks too

When Mark Jarvis took over the kitchen at The Bingham a little over a year ago, it was with an impressive armoury of experience. With stints at restaurants such as Texture, Zuma and Le Manior aux Quat’Saisons under his belt, there was no doubt he’d be bringing something extra special to this beautiful riverside restaurant.

His latest offering is a Mystery Menu, which does exactly what the name suggests – a series of surprise dishes tailored only to any allergic/dietary requirements. The idea, says Mark, is to ‘take guests out of their comfort zone’. Although for a fussy eater it might sound like a worst nightmare come true, it’s a fantastic concept that ensures you get the most out of a kitchen that’s brimming with bright ideas and big flavours. The only thing you can be certain of is that dishes will be created using only the finest, locally-sourced, seasonal and sustainable ingredients. The rest is anybody’s guess.

As well as surprise dishes, you can have drinks paired with each course too. But don’t expect the expected here either – our starter of gazpacho with compressed cucumber, radish and black olive crumble came with a shot of icy vodka, which transformed the vibrant soup into a fun take on a Bloody Mary. Next up, ruby cubes of raw tuna and watermelon with ponzu dressing, adorned with edible flowers and a glass of Riesling. What followed were a selection of dishes featuring some first-rate game, fois gras, truffles, and a whole lot more besides, but I won’t say too much for fear of spoiling the surprise!

Aside from the food and wine, service at The Bingham is consistently brilliant, which made the evening feel even more special. None of the dishes are there to shock or challenge diners, but to introduce flavours and combinations they perhaps wouldn’t have ordered otherwise. A brilliant evening for lovers of food, wine and fabulous times.
