Three years ago this month, Kerbisher & Malt arrived in Brook Green, bringing with it glistening portions of fish and chips to locals eager to eat one of the UK’s favourite dishes the way it should be served – fresh, crispy and hearty.
It wasn’t just a hit with locals, however, and the praise for Kerbisher has just kept rolling in – from 5 stars from Time Out, to being named one of the Top 5 London Chippies by the Evening Standard, and recently winning the Esquire award for the UK’s Best Contemporary Chippy. This last accolade is particularly apt, as even though the food is undeniably traditional, the look is most certainly a bit more modern. Smart tiled walls, large mirrors displaying the menu, and nautical-themed touches keep the feel up-to-date and fresh.
So, onto the food, and as you’d expect, it’s first-rate – fresh fish (from haddock and cod to coley, pollock and plaice), either grilled, battered or coated in matzo meal – cooked to absolute perfection, and a range of sides that turn this simple meal into a feast. Pickled onion rings, spicy veg bites, mushy peas, fennel salad – no-one is going hungry within these walls. With experts manning the fryers, the battered fish is grease-free, leaving room for all these extras, and a few sauces too – we’d recommend the homemade tartar, and irresistible curry.
Since opening the first site, Kerbisher & Malt has spread its wings to Ealing, and occupies a spot on New Broadway. You can eat in or take away, but whatever you choose, bring your appetite!
