Tucked away along Great Russell Street, Tang Noodle Bar combines a stripped-back, no-frills interior with warm wooden tables and industrial style stools. The only cutlery on offer is chopsticks (or training chopsticks for the chopstick challenged!) – strictly no forks allowed…
Words: Rachel Mantock
Never having been able to get the hang of chopsticks within the first few seconds, I would always give up quickly and then unashamedly ask for a fork. To my surprise, that’s not how things work at Tang.
Chen, the cool, quirky and tatted everywhere chef told me playfully that she refuses to have forks in her restaurant and dropped me a pair of training chopsticks instead. These were easy to use, but secretly I vowed to master using real chopsticks within the next week, because I felt like a toddler with my cutesy training chopsticks.
The menu is small and simple; leaving no room for unnecessary fussing that often leads you to choose the wrong thing. The black bean tofu starter dish was so great that I would have been happy eating a huge bowl of it as my main also. Once it was time to order my main, I was already on a tofu roll, quickly selecting the salted vegetables and tofu tang glass noodle bowl, all washed down with a glass of white wine.
The atmosphere was warm and cosy, and the crowd was quirky, everyone dressed in distinctive, dark and striking ensembles. The food offering at Tang is of a higher quality than many of the city’s more glamorous Pan Asian spots, keeping true to traditional far eastern cuisine.
It’s perfect for a quick dip in and out, when you only have time for some small plates and a few drinks, but equally wonderful for long evenings spent catching up with friends and gossiping. I almost didn’t want to write this review because I had added Tang to my list of fantastic secret dining spots that I didn’t want anyone else to know about…
