I am a girl who knows her steaks. Having grown up surrounded by farms and game reserves and later managing a pub specialising in meaty, artisan produce, I know a good cut when I see one.
So I can be a harsh critic to a slab of beef. But the steak I had at the newest Macellaio RC venue on Northcote Road was one of the best cuts of meat I’ve ever had.
Run by Roberto Costa, who founded the very first Macellaio and grew it into a group of successful restaurants in Italy, is a devoted foodie passionate about Italian produce and full of admiration for dedicated artisan farmers.
Inspired by the vibrancy of London and its demanding clientele, he has opened Macellaio RC in Exmouth Market, South Kensington, Union Street and now, Clapham.
Here you can enjoy Fassona beef paired with the finest hand-picked Italian wines in a vibrant and friendly Trattoria environment. They showcase ‘wines of character’, highlighting the distinctive differences between various regions – from Piedmont and the Nebbiolo grape, noble varieties of world famous Barbaresco and Barolo wines, to grapes grown in limited quantities like Pelaverga.
The restaurant details are thought through implicitly, from the menus that are presented as Italian tabloids, down to the welcome you receive when you walk through the door. It’s also a working butchery and you can garner yourself a full education from the staff while dining here (they also run butchery masterclasses).
The starters recommended to us of Battuta, a beef tartare served with spicy gorgonzola, and the steak tartare, were heavenly. I wouldn’t normally go for a meaty starter as well as a steak, but the passion of the waiter had me sold, and I certainly didn’t regret it.

For the main event, my friend and I tucked into a hearty Costata steak or rib-eye that was perfectly presented and cooked to taste.
Often you find in restaurants that really focus on one particular entity that they let themselves down when it comes to the dessert offering. Well, not here. The perfectly sized puddings of tiramisu and cheesecake were absolutely divine.
If you fancy a restaurant with a laid-back, neighbourhood feel, but also want the guarantee of great food, this is a definite for the list.
