KIRU, the contemporary Japanese fine dining restaurant located on Chelsea Green, has launched a new weekend bottomless brunch concept without a smashed avo in sight…
Launched in January 2017, KIRU’s brunch offers a refreshing take on what had become London’s most popular meal.
Smashed avo on toast is replaced with tuna and avocado tacos and spicy tuna avocado rolls. Smoked salmon makes ways for salmon tataki, and those who’ve downed enough Prosecco to sink a ship can make the switch to sake (although Prosecco is available, if you’re rather attached.)
Every Sunday from 1pm till 6pm, a three-course menu is served up alongside your bottomless tipple of choice (sake, Prosecco, white wine or soft drinks), as well as a selection of soft drinks.
Proceedings commence with the cold starters: teeny, delicate little tacos topped with avocado and raw tuna; salmon tataki and an absolutely delectable white fish truffle ponzu (I went back for seconds and thirds of this); and freshly prepared sushi in several guises (salmon cucumber roll, spicy tuna avocado roll, cucumber roll and a nigiri special of the day).

There are also hot and cold starters to order. Choose from miso soup, edamame, Japanese-infused pork steamed buns and a KIRU green leaf salad with shisho dressing.
The edamame, I feel, should simply be delivered to the table when you’re seated, as it is in Japanese izakayas, rather than being listed as a course – it’s a bit like ordering a bowl of peanuts between your starter and main. But I’m probably nitpicking here.
My friend, not holding back, enjoyed the steamed pork bun, while I ordered the salad, knowing that that shisho dressing would be great (and it was). Also, I’d ordered the 12 hour slow-cooked KIRU-style pork belly with balsamic miso glaze and apple salsa as my choice of main course, so I knew I needed to save a little room.
The pork belly wasn’t the most melt-in-the-mouth I’ve ever had, but that balsamic miso glaze was fantastic, so if they can nail that slow-cook, they crowds will come flocking.
Other main course choices include shrimp and vegetable tempura, salmon teriyaki, corn-fed chicken teriyaki (which my friend ordered and thoroughly enjoyed – apart from the ‘end bits’, because she’s a fuss pot), and grilled asparagus with shiro goma dressing (which, I believe, is a white sesame seed dressing).
While working my way through that lot, my sake glass kept on filling, so I was pretty merry by the end of our two hours. If you haven’t given sake a go yet, do, it’s certainly having a moment. We were served Gokai sake, a traditional brand that’s dry and well balanced, so it works well with both lighter and stronger flavours.
A dainty dollop of green tea ice cream for me and coconut ice cream for my friend and we were well sated. The world had been put to rights and we had that tipsy flush, so what to do next? Head to The Botanist on Sloane Square for a night cap, at 4pm…
KIRU’s bottomless brunch is £50pp for three courses plus bottomless drinks (£20pp for those aged 12-years and under plus soft drinks). Brunch is available for two hours from your booking time. Final food orders at 4pm.
