Ginza in Tokyo is where the streets are paved with gold. Well, silver, actually, since ‘gin’ means ‘silver’ and ‘za’ means ‘guild’ in Japanese. And now, you can experience an authentic touch of Japan’s silver streets right here in London…
The swanky district of Ginza in Tokyo is so named because in 1612 the Japanese government transferred its silver mint to this area, and today it is one of the metropolis’s finest shopping areas, with flagship stores by the likes of Gucci, Chanel and Apple, as well as Mitsukoshi – the Japanese equivalent of Selfridges.
Here in London, of course, we have Bond Street, and for a touch of the Japanese ‘silver guild’ experience nearby, head to Ginza St James’s, which offers an authentic and very high end Japanese dining experience.
The restaurant, which opened in early June, offers traditional cooking against an elegant backdrop, where only the finest ingredients are used and the attention to detail in terms of balance and harmony is distinctly Japanese.
The à la carte menu features dishes such as A4 grade Kobe gyu (beef), foie gras served with kinomi miso sauce and cherry wood-smoked salmon teriyaki. Ginza St. James’s also boasts one of the most extensive sake lists in London.
For a unique dining experience, book yourself a seat at one of the two teppan-yaki counters, where the theatre of cooking is as important as the food itself with dishes such as black cod saikyo yaki and Kagoshima wagyu beef cooked in front of your very eyes.

There’s also a Japanese afternoon tea, offering traditional teas – from sencha to ganmaicha – as well as indulgent bites like chicken karaage, teriyaki beef, a wagyu slider and black cod croquette, plus sweet treats such as passionfruit curd and mochi.
The restaurant also offers an ‘omakase’ experience – roughly translated as ‘I will let you decide’ or, very roughly translated, ‘the chef’s specials’. Here, sushi fans can experience a menu tailored for each guest.
Plus, for special occasions, Ginza St James’s also has two private dining rooms, ideal for an event or personal gathering, with a flexible choice of set up and a bespoke menu.
Open now from Tues-Sat for lunch and dinner (last bookings 10.30pm).
