What better way to treat mum than with cake and champagne? The Resident picks out London’s best afternoon teas for a Mother’s Day treat on Sunday 31 March 2019

1 Baluchi at The LaLiT London, London Bridge
Santosh Shah, Executive Chef of The LaLiT London, has partnered with former Great British Bake-Off contestant Rav Bansal to create a limited-edition High Chai afternoon tea. Perfect for Mother’s Day, the special afternoon tea, which has been given a contemporary Indian twist, is served in the hotel’s stunning pan-Indian dining destination, Baluchi. Tuck into Santosh Shah’s savoury bites including pulled lamb brioche with tomato jam; Punjabi samosas with tamarind imli chutney; and chicken kathi rolls with chicken tikka, peppers and spices wrapped. Finish with the Great British Bake Off star’s cardamom and rose choux au craquelin; chai and coconut mousse cake; and spiced santra mille feuille. Bansal has also designed a menu of floral-inspired cocktails such as the coconut chilli mojito and rose petal and hibiscus martini. 2 Mariage Freres, Covent Garden
Mariage Freres beautiful Salon de Thé is a great spot to treat mum this Mother’s Day. The King Street Afternoon Tea (£39pp) comes with an assortment of tea-infused savoury delights such as avocado ‘guacamole style’ with matcha tea, tumeric-seasoned shrimps with Halleujah tea-infused coulis, or roasted cauliflower with a smoky black tea. Sweet treats include warm baked Parisian fruit scones with Gelées extra de Thé jelly and tea-infused desserts such as Rouge in Love, a red-tea candied strawberry with citrus whipped cream, vanilla shortbread and French meringue. 3 Swan, Shakespeare’s Globe, South Bank
Swan, Shakespeare’s Globe is a British restaurant and bar located next door to The Globe right on the Thames, with great views of St Paul’s Cathedral across the river. The Midsummer Night’s Dream afternoon tea, inspired by the journeys of the characters found in the famous play by Shakespeare, is a great Mother’s Day treat, featuring the pea flower of Oberon’s love potion, the apricots Titania feeds to Bottom and, of course, mulberries from the lovers’ tree. Savoury choices include Scottish smoked salmon sandwiches with citrus cream and watercress, and wild mushroom and leek quiche, while sweets include a Poire William salted caramel Opera; blackcurrant jam and violet macaroons; and rhubarb and custard chouquette. Mulberry scones served with clotted Devon cream and midsummer berry jam and a Love Potion cocktail made with Bombay Sapphire gin, honey, blackberry puree and prosecco also feature. Priced £28.50pp.

4 Mamounia LoungeKnightsbridge
Mamounia Lounge, the Middle Eastern restaurant and cocktail bar in Knightsbridge, is offering their Lebanese and Moroccan Afternoon Tea for free to mums who dine in a party of four this Mother’s Day. Created by Head Chef Thamer Darwish, the Middle Eastern afternoon tea pays homage to the ingredients and flavour combinations used in authentic Arabic cooking, using recipes passed down by his other mother. The afternoon delight features halloumi and basil mini wraps, zaalouk and mechouia bruschetta, mahalabia with caramelised pistachios and date molasses, a selection of baklawa and authentic Morrocan tea. 5 Maître Choux, Soho & Chelsea
Celebrate Mother’s Day with Maître Choux’s perfectly pink afternoon tea. Unlike the more traditional savoury afternoon tea, Maître Choux’s tasting menu is an expertly paired selection of éclairs and choux with glasses of Laurent-Perrier champagne, including the iconic La Cuvée Rosé. You also can treat yourself to just a single glass of bubbly, along with the éclair, choux, or chouquette of your choice. Priced £84 for two, including a selection of chouquettes, a glass of Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée and Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé each, along with a paired selection of éclairs and choux to share. An alcohol-free menu including teas, coffees, hot chocolate, cold drinks and juices is also available.

6 St Ermin’s Hotel, Westminster
Celebrate Mother’s Day with afternoon tea at St Ermin’s Hotel, available on both 30 & 31 March. Created by Executive Head Chef, Alexander Boyd, the Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea menu includes a variety of sandwiches, delicate savoury bites and freshly baked scones with clotted cream and homemade jam, as well as seasonal sweet treats such as coffee & hazelnut filled shortbread; apple, blackberry and custard delice; and a matcha choux bun with yuzu cream. Mum will also get a St Ermin’s English Breakfast Tea Caddy to take home as a special gift, plus, little ones will love the Mini Gardener Tea at £15pp and can also go on an adventure to see the hotel’s 350,000 Buckfast Honey bees on the third floor Bee Terrace. 7 Bite Me Burger Co, Chalk Farm
If mum doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, how about an afternoon tea featuring six mini burgers? Launching this Mother’s Day, 31 March 2019, exclusively at Bite Me Burger Co in Chalk Farm, the innovative afternoon tea features an eclectic pick ‘n’ mix burger menu, homemade burger cupcakes and cakes, plus tea, coffee or bubbly for two. The burger menu boasts 15 varieties, from the best-selling Beef Encounter with homemade burger sauce to the Lambtastic, deep fried Codzilla and the chickpea Vegan Me. Traditional sandwiches and scones are out; the mini burgers are in!
