London’s Best New Restaurants & Bars: January 2019

Assuming you’re not watching your wallet or your waistline this January, here’s what’s new on London’s food and drink scene…

1 Yeni, Soho
From the banks of the Bosphorus, critically acclaimed restaurant Yeni Lokanta brings the food and culture of Istanbul to Soho with the opening of Yeni on 21 January 2019. Founding partners – Cem Bilge and celebrated chef Civan Er – will introduce London to the flavours and culinary traditions that reflect Istanbul’s rich heritage as the meeting point of Asia and Europe. Yeni Lokanta quickly garnered a cult following on opening in Istanbul in 2013, with Civan being awarded GQ and Time Out’s Chef of the Year in 2014. Yeni draws influence from the different ethnicities that unite on the streets of Civan’s hometown to inspire vegetable dishes including ‘zeytinyagli’, an Aegean method where vegetables are braised in olive oil; aubergine filled manti with goats’ yoghurt; as well as fish and meat options such as traditional Antep sausages with borlotti bean puree; and line-caught bass with raki and feta. Larger plates of oven-roasted ribs on sourdough with cracked wheat, sour cherries and sumac molasses and octopus with ‘salty fingers’ will be prepared on the charcoal josper grill.

2 Farzi Cafe, Haymarket
Experimental modern spice bistro Farzi Café opens on Friday 18 January in London’s Haymarket. This will be the first London outpost for Farzi Cafe, which already has nine successful restaurants across India and in Dubai. Known for its experimental Indian cuisine, molecular gastronomy and food theatre unlike anything seen before, Farzi Café will be bringing something truly unique to London’s dining scene. Founder Zorawar Kalra, mentored by his illustrious father, Jiggs Kalra, the ‘Czar of Indian Cuisine’ is credited with introducing some of the most awarded restaurant concepts in India and is regarded as ‘The Prince of Indian cuisine’.

3 Soho Residence, Soho
Soho Residence in the West End has undergone a £1 million restoration and is now open for business. The iconic bar, club and lounge space, formerly known as The O Bar, is spread across three floors of the 126 year old Roundhouse building. The ritzy space offers a Botanical Bar with art deco style, late night party space Festival Club and decadent Gin Parlour, all offering a sense of elegance with snug sofas and huge windows, rich fabrics and beautiful plants. The ground floor Botanical Bar will serve contemporary cocktails full of fun, flair and flavour, the basement Festival Club has high-end lighting, big-screen imaging and a selection of craft beers and cocktails for nights of grown-up fun and late-night partying, and finally the first-floor Gin Parlour serves an extensive selection of the world’s finest gins. Open until 3am Monday to Saturday, and 12.30am on Sundays.

4 Megan’s, Clapham Old Town
South west London favourite Megan’s opened a new restaurant in Clapham Old Town in December (we were distracted by Winterville and missed this one off our December openings roundup – forgive us!). The new opening marks a welcome addition to its existing offerings in Fulham, Parsons Green and Balham. Expect antipasti and charcuterie sharing boards to start, with Shakshouka or deconstructed pan kebabs for main at the dog-friendly spot. It’s a great all-day spot, where you can delve into Megan’s famous all-day brunch, healthy salads and evening offerings influenced by the Mediterranean. You’ll also find some excellent brunch offerings and a knock-out salted caramel martini.

5 Provisioners, Tower Bridge
Provisioners, the new restaurant at The Dixon boutique hotel in Tower Bridge, will open on 14 January. Provisioners is the latest project by Clive Watson of Blixen, Lorne and previously of Village East, The Garrison and beloved London favourite, Riding House Café. Head Chef Lerrico Messina has worked closely with Watson to devise a varied, accessible all-day menu which will provide fresh, uncomplicated and comforting food available throughout the day and well into the evening. Highlights include Culurgiones (Sardinian dumplings) with pecorino and winter truffle, Braised 8-hour lamb shoulder sandwich on garlic focaccia, and Shanghai master-stock duck pie, roasted duck breast, and duck liver parfait. Provisioners’ adjoining cafe will project an Italian vibe, with signature coffee blend Shakedown Coffee roasted in-house (available for retail, drink in and takeaway), cakes and toasted sandwiches by day, before turning into a wine, aperitivo and charcuterie bar in the evening.

6 Sushi Daily, New Oxford Street
Following success with their kiosks around the globe, artisan sushi retailer Sushi Daily has opened its very own site on New Oxford Street. Founded by Kelly Choi of KellyDeli, Sushi Daily is now collaborating with Silla Bjerrum, formerly of Feng Sushi, to serve fresh, handmade sushi, hot dishes and breakfast items. The menu is well-balanced, nutritious and low in saturated fats. Classic sushi options, such as salmon pure California roll and Devon crab California roll, sit alongside vegetable-based sushi and pots including shiitake California roll, seaweed salad and salmon poke. Warming, authentic Japanese dishes like yakisoba, katsu curry and udon soup are also available, as well as healthy breakfast items like quinoa brown rice porridge served from 7.30am daily. There’s also an Click and Collect system online for an even faster service.

7 The Cheese Room at Le Pont de la Tour, Shad Thames
Le Pont de la Tour’s Cheese Room is an adorable little Thames-facing hut on their famous terrace. Available throughout January, the Cheese Room provides an intimate dining experience for groups of up to four to indulge in a three-course menu with champagne, half a bottle of house red wine, your own private waiter and views of Tower Bridge. The Cheese Room menu offers the opportunity to enjoy one of France’s oldest cheese, Fourme d’Ambert, accompanied with chicory velouté, red Port shallots and a refreshing glass of Moét and Chandon to start. Continue with the signature fondue feast, complete with emmental and gruyere cheese mixed with white wine. For dessert there’s a warm and gooey chocolate fondant. Available until 25 January. £50 per person. Lunch sittings at 12pm or 2.30pm; evening sittings at 6pm or 8.30pm.

8 BBQ Dreams at MEATLiquor Kings Cross
Street food stalwarts BBQ Dreamz are bringing their Filipino cooking to MEATLiquor Kings Cross for a six-week Sunday residency from Sunday 13 January. Fresh from their success on BBC’s series My Million Pound Menu, which saw them partner with Draft House founder Charlie McVeigh, founders Lee Johnson and Sinead Campbell will be launching a Sunday pop-up featuring a tasting menu comprised of signature BBQ Dreamz dishes featured on the show. The 10-course tasting menu kicks off with some BBQ Dreamz favourites – grilled satay duck heart skewers in homage to Lee’s auntie who runs a skewer stall back in their home village – followed by Lechon Kawali (pork belly that is sous vide for 36 hours, chopped up in to crispy nuggets and served with a sweet and sour Papaya noodle salad). 9 The Gun, Spitalfields
The Gun, Spitalfields, snuck in its opening on 12 December, just as silly season kicked off and we were all staring into a bottle of prosecco. Located on the south side of Spitalfields Market, The Gun opens on the same site as the old Victorian pub of the same name but with a brand-new fit out. The modern boozer has an industrial vibe, craft beers, premium wines and an extensive gin collection, as well as a dining menu inspired by British classics made from locally sourced produce and ingredients. The pub, once home to the site of King Henry VIII’s weapons practice ground, takes inspiration from 17th century London and the area’s heritage of artillery factories and breweries, while offering something thoroughly modern.
