Joanna’s in Crystal Palace Celebrates 40 Years with Vintage Specials Menu

Joanna’s restaurant, the critically-acclaimed Crystal Palace institution, celebrates its 40th birthday this April by welcoming back an array of special vintage dishes…

What’s hot; what’s not? Burgers or bistro? London’s restaurants come and go, so it’s great when a neighbourhood favourite hangs around. Celebrating 40 years at the top of the hill, Joanna’s in Crystal Palace is showcasing some of its most beloved classic dishes in a limited-edition Vintage Specials menu, available from 23 March until 22 April 2018.

Take your pick from chilli con carne with sour cream and corn chips, or classic prawn cocktail to start, both of which were served in the restaurant’s inaugural year. You can then feast on a half rack of baby back ribs (also from 1978), or the chargrilled fillet steak with chilli-roasted onions and crispy ‘seaweed’, originally introduced in 1992.

The Vintage Specials can be enjoyed together with the team’s latest all-day à la carte menu, including the Joanna’s hamburger, a consistent best-seller since 1978.

John and Christina Ellner’s American grill-house influenced opening menu was unique in south London at that time, and over the past four decades the husband and wife co-owners and their son William have continued to push the boundaries of neighbourhood dining.

Taking its name from the rhyming slang for the piano that was often played by John and the restaurant’s visitors, Joanna’s rapidly became a staple fixture locally.

‘Many things have changed since 1978, but the atmosphere, warmth and hospitality at the heart of our restaurant remains,’ says owner William Ellner.

‘We are most thankful to all of the people who have supported us over the years and placed us at the heart of the Crystal Palace dining community, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to celebrate our 40th birthday with us this year!’

On Saturday 7 April – the restaurant’s official 40th birthday – diners visiting Joanna’s for lunch or dinner will be offered a complimentary glass of Prosecco to accompany their meal.
