How to Help London’s Restaurants, Bars & Hotels

We are living in unprecedented times.

The government’s attempts to slow the spread of Coronavirus by asking Londoners to stay home is a sensible measure that we should all adhere to if we can – key workers, we salute you! – but people’s livelihoods are at risk.

Our vibrant city is full of vibrant shops, restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs, theatres and local businesses in all shapes and sizes, some are big chains, many are independently owned, but all are in for a rough ride.

Small independents are likely to be the most vulnerable, so do hop onto their website and social media to see if there are asking for any specific help. Many are even offering it, looking out for the most vulnerable in our communities.

Here’s a guide to some simple steps you can take to support our much-loved local businesses:

  • Head to your local store for your essentials rather than the supermarket – up until now we’ve found that they have been less hard hit by panic-buyers than the big supermarkets
  • If you’ve bought tickets for an event that has been cancelled, and you can afford to, don’t request a refund – the price of your ticket could help to pay somebody’s wages
  • Order takeaways from your local independent restaurant. Many of them are on popular delivery apps such as Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat, and most are now offering ‘contact free’ delivery and extra hygiene measures
  • Buy a restaurant voucher or gift certificate that you can use at a later date⁣ to help boost cash flow that might well go towards paying somebody’s wages
  • Friend’s birthday on the horizon? Buy them a restaurant voucher
  • Make a donation, if you’re able. Seek out your favourite business and see if they’ve set up a crowdfunding site. If not, get in touch and ask if you can overpay for a product or service, or just make a straight-out contribution
  • Order from your favourite shops and brands online – many have now set up online delivery services where they weren’t available before⁣
  • Use your voice on social media to support independent businesses and share their posts – or leave lots of positive comments – to boost their exposure
