Prêt-à-Portea will make its fashionably late return to The Berkeley once the hotel reopens its doors to all from 17 May. The trend-led afternoon tea will showcase SS21 couture cakes inspired by designers from Valentino to Versace.
This season’s collection opens with Donatella Versace’s ocean-inspired cocktail dress, reimagined as a coconut darquoise and mango confit encased in a fruit mousse and topped with a shimmering sugar starfish.
Moschino’s SS21 show was a memorable spectacle with 40 looks scaled down to fit string puppets, complete with an Anna Wintour puppet sitting on the front row. Here, The Berkeley pastry team pays homage by intricately icing the Vogue editor-in-chief’s iconic sunglasses and blonde bob onto a vanilla biscuit.
The bold capsule collection of cakes also includes Tod’s neon tote bag transformed into a citrus Victoria sponge, glazed with acid-lime icing and sandwiched between florescent green Valrhona chocolate Ivoire; Valentino’s vivid green printed gown as a pistachio bavarois with Amerena cherry, set on a pistachio croquant and finished with a sugar lily; and Isabel Marant’s high shine, disco-inspired purple ensemble as an almond sponge with a beriolette jelly centre, glazed in glittering purple and topped with a matching chocolate bow.
But the showstopper has to be Michael Halpern’s feather couture gown reimagined as a light financier cake with raspberry compote, Amatika chocolate dome with praline crunch, grue de cacao and black wafer legs sit akimbo on top.
‘Every season we study each and every fashion show looking for the stand out looks that we can then magic into cakes for our fashion-obsessed guests,’ said The Berkeley Executive Pastry Chef Mourad Khiat.
‘The September Spring Summer shows looked a little different due to the global pandemic, but designers still managed to inspire and dazzle […] and we hope that the sheer fantasy of catwalk fashion will delight those returning for Prêt-à-Portea.’
