Now You Can Dine Above the Thames on the Emirates Air Line Cable Car

It’s not just the skyscrapers going up on Greenwich Peninsula, a new airborne gourmet experience – Sky High Dining – has just taken off at Emirates Airline…

Jimmy Garcia, the acclaimed nomadic chef behind Jimmy’s BBQ Club and Patch & Picnic on the Southbank and The Burger Project at Roof East – and a plethora of other pop-ups across London – has launched the experience, which offers you the chance to dine 90m in the air above the Thames.

You’ll enjoy a specially curated five-course menu on board a specially equipped Emirates Air Line pod while taking in uninterrupted views of London’s iconic skyline.

The experience starts with welcome bubbles and canapes before a starter of grilled scallop served with chickpea, chorizo and cauliflower. Then, you’ll board your four-person dining cabin to enjoy the main course – lamb rump with pea and broad bean salad, roscoff onion, potato terrine, pea and mint puree and an onion jus – while admiring the scenery as you ‘fly’ across the Thames.

And if lamb’s not your thing? Opt for the Ricotta Gnudi, featuring Gnudi served with purple sprouting broccoli, gremolata, brown butter dressing, seasonal squash and toasted sunflower seeds.

You’ll have the time it takes to complete one circuit of the Emirates Air Line route from Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Victoria Docks and back to enjoy your main course and a glass or two of a very good bottle of Carménère or Cigonyes Blanc (around 15 minutes each way, which is plenty of time).

Then, as you return to the Greenwich Peninsula terminal, staff will swiftly switch your dinner plates for your dessert – a wonderful Mint Aero in the Clouds (a white chocolate sphere with passion fruit curd, meringue shards, coconut financier and fresh mango topped with a rum and passion fruit syrup), before you take to the skies again for sunset.

On the final leg of your journey, returning from Royal Victoria Docks to the Peninsula, the brilliant staff will furnish you with a cocktail – either an Aviator, very apt, though a little sharp, or a velvety smooth Espresso Martini – and petit fours of mini macarons and popping-candy infused truffles.

Sky High Dining is the second airborne dining experience to land on Greenwich Peninsula this summer – London in the Sky, which serves up specially curated menus at 100ft-high suspended Sky Tables – has also taken flight. So if you’re planning a trip to the O2 Arena this summer, or the ExCel Centre, you know what to do…

Tickets for Sky High Dining start from £100pp and advance booking is recommended. Seats can be booked from 6.30pm every Wednesday and Thursday evening from 12 June until mid-September 2019. The experience lasts 90-120 minutes. See jimmyspopup.com
