Cruella de Vil is back. The fashion-obsessed heiress, with a penchant for furs and an eye for Dalmatians, returns to cinema screens on 28 May 2021 in Cruella. Disney’s new 101 Dalmatians spin-off stars Emma Stone as the younger version of the ‘devil woman’ so excellently portrayed by Glenn Close in the 1996 film adaptation of Walt Disney’s 1961 animated original.
In homage to such incredibly chic wickedness, The Lanesborough hotel in Knightsbridge has launched a new Cruella-inspired afternoon tea called It’s A Little Bit Mad.
Launching on the same day that the film is released, 28 May, and running throughout the summer, the afternoon tea will feature striking sculptural edible art in shades of black, red and gold inspired by the glamorous pop-culture icon.
The film, set against the backdrop of 1970s London with scenes shot at the likes of Liberty department store, Portobello Road and the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, blends fashion, rebellion and a little punk rock, which has been expertly translated into an afternoon tea by The Lanesborough’s Head Pastry Chef, Kevin Miller.
You’ll find fantastical cakes like Anarchy Reigns, a millionaire shortbread presented on a mini artists easel; Runaway Diva, a treacle tart with a whipped dulcey ganache and Cruella’s iconic red lips; Fashion Makes Art Makes Fashion, a black-and-red chocolate and raspberry Battenberg cake; Rebel Heart, a fragmented black heart with white chocolate feuillentine base, yoghurt raspberry mousse and liquid hibiscus centre; Modern Masterpiece, a gold inside-out lemon cheesecake with blueberry compote and blackcurrant and violet sauce; and Totally Unexpected, a red choux bun hat with caramelised banana and pecan nut crema.
There are also classic savoury sandwich favourites, a prawn and lobster tartlet, and chocolate chip and dried-cranberry scones baked square, served with clotted cream and strawberry jam served in individual glass vials.
The Lanesborough has also created a ‘Scene Stealer’ cocktail that is delivered to the table on a tray of dry ice. The serve fuses Bombay Bramble (a new gin flavoured with blackberries and raspberries) with lemon juice, raspberry purée, maraschino cherry juice and simple syrup, topped with white apricot air foam and dry-freeze blackberry dust.
The whole thing is served in one of London’s most beautiful dining settings under the naturally illuminated domed glass roof of Michelin-starred restaurant, Céleste.
The Lanesborough’s Cruella-inspired Afternoon Tea is available from 28 May to 4 August 2021 priced from £55pp (a children’s version is available from £25. Cruella is at cinemas and on Disney+ with Premier Access on 28 May 2021
