CAMPAIGN TO SAVE BRITAIN’S PUB GARDENS

Recent research* claims that an average of 28 pubs close a week in Britain, so woodcare specialist Cuprinol  has done the decent thing and launched a campaign to save them – specifically Britain’s beer gardens

 Beer gardens play an important role in the community, especially in London where outdoor space is at a premium. Two thirds** (61%) of Brits agree that spending time in a beer garden makes them happy and more than half (53%) believe that it’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon with friends and family. However, two thirds (61%) of Brits think landlords fail to make the most of their outdoor space and a third (34%) would spend more time in their beer garden if it was more welcoming.

As pubs closures hit an all-time high of 28 per week, The Avalon beer garden in Clapham, London, has been cheered up by Cuprinol to mark the launch of Cheers it Up. The nationwide initiative aims to cheer up unloved beer gardens and encourage communities to support their ‘local’. The makeover took a team of 12 four days to complete, using over 120 litres of Cuprinol Garden Shades and 140 litres Cuprinol decking stain.  Taking that on board, Cuprinol have launched ‘Cheers it up’, a nationwide search for an unloved British beer garden in need of cheering up. The winning pub will be rewarded with a complete makeover courtesy of Cuprinol.

Cuprinol has already got its hands on one pub garden in Clapham. The Avalon in Clapham South has been given a Cuprinol Cheers It Up new look. The makeover took a team of 12 four days to complete, using over 120 litres of Cuprinol Garden Shades and 140 litres Cuprinol decking stain.

The new Cuprinol makeover will encourage new and current customers to get out in the beer garden and make the most of the great outdoor space.’

 On the importance of keeping Britain’s beer gardens alive, Neil Walker, Press Manager for the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), says: ‘Pubs are closing at an alarming rate, so it’s important that landlords make the most of any outdoor space in order to attract people to use their local pub this summer. When the sun is shining there really is no better place to enjoy a pint of real ale than in a well maintained British beer garden.’ 

Top five unwelcoming traits of a beer garden:

1. Cigarette butts (73%)

2. Dirty furniture and decking (69%)

3. Rotten wood (58%)

 4. Dark and Dingy space (57%)

 5. Chipped and peeling paint (51%)

 

Top three places to spend time on a sunny day:

1. Your own garden (69%) 

2. The park (41%) 

3. Beer garden (29%)
